Cognition, learning behaviour and hippocampal synaptic plasticity are not disrupted in mice over-expressing the cholesterol transporter ABCG1

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2009
Background Cognitive deficits are a hallmark feature of both Down Syndrome (DS) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Extra copies of the genes on chromosome 21 may also play an important role in the accelerated onset of AD in DS individuals.

Macrophage Lipid Homeostasis Drives IVDD via a Senescence‐Dependent Impairment of Efferocytosis

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) has been a leading cause of low back pain and lacks disease‐modifying therapies. Although dysregulated disc lipid metabolism is implicated, its impact on the immune microenvironment, particularly macrophages, remains unknown.

Ras/MAPK signaling modulates ABCG1 activity in CHO-ABCG1 cells.

open access: yes, 2013
(A) CHO-ABCG1 cells were incubated ±10 µM PD98059 for 24 h as indicated and subjected to subcellular fractionation through Percoll gradients. Ras-containing plasma membrane fractions (PM) in the middle of the gradient were isolated and analyzed for the ...

ABCG1 is deficient in alveolar macrophages of GM-CSF knockout mice and patients with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2007
Patients with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) display impaired surfactant clearance, foamy, lipid-filled alveolar macrophages, and increased cholesterol metabolites within the lung.

MD‐1 Deficiency Mitigates Atherosclerosis by Inhibiting NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation via cGAS‐STING Dependent Pathway in Macrophages

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
MD‐1 is induced and activated in macrophages. The activated MD‐1 subsequently promotes the cGAS‐STING‐TBK1‐IRF3 signalling pathway to activate the NLRP3 inflammasome, and subsequently increases pro‐inflammatory macrophage polarisation and decreases plaque stability to accelerate the development of atherosclerosis.

Ras/MAPK inhibition reduces ABCG1 expression in CHO cells.

open access: yes, 2013
(A–C) CHO-ABCG1 (A), HEK293 (B) and THP1 macrophages (C) cells were incubated ±50 µM GW3965 and 10 µM PD98059 for 24 h as indicated. Cell lysates were analyzed for ABCG1, activated Erk1/2 (P-Erk1/2), Total Erk1/2 and β-actin.

Differential expression and function of ABCG1 and ABCG4 during development and aging[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2010
ABCG1 and ABCG4 are highly homologous members of the ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporter family that regulate cellular cholesterol homeostasis. In adult mice, ABCG1 is known to be expressed in numerous cell types and tissues, whereas ABCG4 expression ...

Hypomethylation of ABCG1 in peripheral blood as a potential marker for the detection of coronary heart disease

open access: yesClinical Epigenetics, 2023
Background Novel molecular biomarkers for the risk assessment and early detection of coronary heart disease (CHD) are urgently needed for disease prevention.

Established and Emerging Biomarkers to Characterize Persons at Risk for Obesity—Paving the Way for Targeted Clinical Intervention Trials—A Comprehensive Position Paper

open access: yesObesity Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Despite all efforts, obesity remains a major health concern worldwide, with continuously increasing rates, affecting approx. 14% of the total world population, being as high as 43% in some countries. As obesity is related to numerous comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and some types of cancer, the consequences ...
