Leishmania mexicana: Amastigote hydrolases in unusual lysosomes

Experimental Parasitology, 1986
Leishmania mexicana mexicana (M379) amastigotes were found to contain much higher activities than cultured promastigotes of five putative lysosomal enzymes: cysteine proteinase; arylsulfatase (EC 3.1.6.1); beta-glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31); DNase (EC 3.1.22.1), and RNase (EC 3.1.27.1).

Leishmania enriettii Amastigotes: Demonstration of Fibrillar Surface

The Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1982
An extensive fibrillar surface was identified in situ by transmission electron microscopy on the amastigote stage of the macrophage intracellular parasite, Leishmania enriettii. Attachment to the amastigote surface of 20-160-nm fibrils was clearly evident on organisms that had been isolated from guinea pigs.

Concanavalin a Binding Receptors on Trypanosoma cruzi Amastigotes

The Journal of Parasitology, 1980
501-505) as adapted by Garcia et al. (1978, Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 188: 315-322). The bugs used in our experiments consumed 160 to 200 mg of blood. Only 15% of the insects did not feed fully and were discarded. The number of bugs dissected at different intervals after infection and the number of parasites per bug are summarized in Table I.

Effect of Gossypol on Trypomastigotes and Amastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi

The Journal of Protozoology, 1990
ABSTRACTBloodstream Trypanosoma cruzi trypomastigotes isolated from infected mice undergo reduction of motility and structural damages after 5 to 45 min exposure to gossypol at concentrations ranging from 5 to 50 μM. When 1% serum albumin is added to the incubation medium, no alterations of parasites are observed, even with 100 μM gossypol ...

Migration of Leishmania donovani Amastigotes in the Cerebrospinal Fluid

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1996
A 10-year-old boy had been suffering from kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis) for two and a half years. He failed to respond to all known anti-leishmanial treatment regimens. Even the drastic step of splenectomy failed to cure him. In November 1991, he presented with symptoms of meningitis.

An assay to quantitate the binding of leishmania amastigotes to macrophages

Journal of Immunological Methods, 1990
A leishmania amastigote radiobinding assay has been developed using organisms labeled with tritiated uracil. These labeled amastigotes resemble freshly isolated unlabeled amastigotes in metabolic activity, buoyant density, morphology, viability and their ability to transform into promastigotes. Organisms routinely incorporate between 5 x 10(-3) and 3 x

Mathematical morphology for counting Trypanosoma cruzi amastigotes

2013 XXXIX Latin American Computing Conference (CLEI), 2013
The hemoflagellate protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of the Chagas disease. The two drugs used clinically have a high level of toxicity and are active only during the acute phase of the disease, making it urgent the development of new safe and effective treatment. The first step in the screening of new compounds is to identify

Leishmania tropica: Differences in the antigenicity of promastigotes and amastigotes

Cellular Immunology, 1985
In vitro bioassays were used to compare T-cell responses induced by the intramacrophage amastigote stage and the sandfly-borne promastigote stage of Leishmania tropica. Lymph node cells from mice immunized with sonicated promastigotes or amastigotes incorporated in Freund's complete adjuvant were assayed for their ability to proliferate and to release ...

Long Term Cryopreservation of the Amastigote Stages of Hemoflagellates

The Journal of Protozoology, 1988
ABSTRACT. Tissue homogenates containing amastigotes of either Leishmania donovani, L. tropica, or Trypanosoma cruzi were rapidly frozen with 10% glycerol as cryoprotectant. Viability and pathogenicity were maintained for at least 23 years with the Khartoum strain of L. donovani, 22 years with the Malakal strain of L.
