Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Aristolochic Acid I-Induced Kidney Diseases: What We Know and What We Do Not Know

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Aristolochic acids, compounds derived from Aristolochiaceae plant species, are associated with significant renal nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity. Aristolochic acid I (AAI), the most predominant and potent of these compounds, is a primary etiological ...

Unambiguous detection of multiple TP53 gene mutations in AAN-associated urothelial cancer in Belgium using laser capture microdissection.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
In the Balkan and Taiwan, the relationship between exposure to aristolochic acid and risk of urothelial neoplasms was inferred from the A>T genetic hallmark in TP53 gene from malignant cells.

Omeprazole Alleviates Aristolochia manshuriensis Kom-Induced Acute Nephrotoxicity. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Aristolochia manshuriensis Kom (AMK) is a member of the Aristolochiaceae family and is a well-known cause of aristolochic acid (AA) nephropathy. In this study, we investigated the potential of omeprazole (OM) to alleviate AMK-induced nephrotoxicity.

BK virus‐associated urothelial carcinoma—A supra‐regional cohort of kidney transplant recipients

open access: yesBJUI Compass, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Objectives This study aims to study the clinical features, pathological findings, and outcomes of BK virus‐associated urothelial carcinoma (UC) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Patients and Methods The study was conducted in a retrospective cohort of KTRs with histologically confirmed UC managed at a UK supra‐regional transplant urology

Association of a bitter taste receptor mutation with Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN)

open access: yesBMC Medical Genetics, 2012
Background Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) is late-onset kidney disease thought to arise from chronic exposure to aristolochic acid, a phytotoxin that contaminates wheat supplies in rural areas of Eastern Europe.

Disease Burden and Disparities of Care for Kidney Health in the Asian Pacific Region: Summary Report From the Diversity and Equity Committee of APSN

open access: yesNephrology, Volume 31, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim The Diversity and Equity Committee (DEC) of the Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN) conducted a regional review to characterise disparities in kidney disease burden, healthcare access and nephrology service delivery across the Asia‐Pacific (AP) region.

Collecting Duct Carcinoma and Endemic Nephropathy – Case Reports and Literature Review

open access: yesActa Clinica Croatica, 2020
Although collecting duct carcinoma is a subtype of renal cell carcinoma, several studies implicate association with urothelial carcinoma. The coexistence of collecting duct carcinoma and another renal neoplasm is rare.

Advancing Extracellular Vesicle Research: A Review of Systems Biology and Multiomics Perspectives

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, Volume 26, Issue 2-3, Page 33-80, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane‐bound vesicles secreted by various cell types into the extracellular space and play a role in intercellular communication. Their molecular cargo varies depending on the cell of origin and its functional state.

Affinity‐Based Protein Profiling Revealed that HIGD1A is a Direct Target Protein of Aristolochic Acids

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 5, 27 January 2026.
Using an affinity‐based probe, this study reveals that aristolochic acid directly binds to HIGD1A with high affinity in the kidney. This binding disrupts the HIGD1A‐TFAM interaction, which in turn triggers TFAM degradation, cytosolic mitochondrial DNA release, and the activation of inflammatory pathways. Abstract Exposure to aristolochic acids (AA) via

MicroRNA‐382 Is Involved in Acute Kidney Injury via Regulating STAT1 Signaling

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Acute kidney injury (AKI), characterized by inflammation and oxidative stress, is a life‐threatening clinical presentation. We previously demonstrated the role of miR‐382 in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the role of miR‐382 in AKI is unknown.
