Microalgae cultivation for lipids and carbohydrates production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Microalgae are photoautotrophic microorganisms that can produce energy both by using sunlight, water and CO2 (phototrophic metabolism) and by using organic sources such as glucose (heterotrophic metabolism).

Plant‐derived vesicle‐like nanoparticles in food crops: emerging insights into nutritional biofortification and biomedical applications

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary Food crops, as the cornerstone of human nutrition, not only provide essential macronutrients but also encompass a rich spectrum of bioactive compounds that promote health. Of particular significance are underutilized minor crops, which contain unique beneficial components with proven nutraceutical properties. These valuable bioactive components

Breeding triple‐advantage cottonseed with higher yield, enhanced nutrition, and reduced toxicity by redirecting terpenoid metabolism to astaxanthin

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary Cottonseed is a valuable source of edible oil and protein, but its utilization is limited by high gossypol content. In this study, we engineered cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) to biosynthesize astaxanthin through both single‐gene (CrBKT) and multi‐gene (CrBKT, ZmPSY1, PaCrtI, HpCrtZ) expression strategies.

Oilseed‐based metabolic engineering of astaxanthin and related ketocarotenoids using a plant‐derived pathway: Lab‐to‐field‐to‐application

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary Ketocarotenoids, including astaxanthin, are red lipophilic pigments derived from the oxygenation of β‐carotene ionone rings. These carotenoids have exceptional antioxidant capacity and high commercial value as natural pigments, especially for aquaculture feedstocks to confer red flesh colour to salmon and shrimp.

Astaxanthin and Related Xanthophylls

open access: yes, 2014
This chapter describes astaxanthin and other xanthophylls, which are a class of carotenoids with oxygenated groups in their structure and characteristic vivid colors. Taking astaxanthin as a key example, the presented concepts focus on the functional aspects and applications of xanthophylls, such as their nutritional value, potential for protection ...

Immune evasion in cancer: mechanistic basis and therapeutic strategies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Cancer immune evasion is a major stumbling block in designing effective anticancer therapeutic strategies. Although considerable progress has been made in understanding how cancers evade destructive immunity, measures to counteract tumor escape have not ...
