ProTides for Antiviral Activity Beyond Liver Cells

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 32, Issue 21, 1 June 2026.
A strategy for obtaining prodrugs of antiviral nucleotides with broad tissue activity is presented that relies on cycloalkyl or cycloalkylalkyl esters, improving uptake and esterase cleavage, and producing nanomolar inhibitors in kidney, colon, and lung cells.

Regulatory effects of genomic translocations at the human carboxylesterase-1 (CES1) gene locus [PDF]

open access: yesPharmacogenetics and Genomics, 2016
CES1 encodes carboxylesterase-1, an important drug-metabolizing enzyme with high expression in the liver. Previous studies have reported a genomic translocation of the 5' region from the poorly expressed pseudogene CES1P1, to CES1, yielding the structural variant CES1VAR.

Driving Sustainability Through Market Orientation: A Study on Corporate Environmental Sustainability and Performance Outcomes in the Energy Sector

open access: yesClimate Resilience and Sustainability, Volume 5, Issue 1, June 2026.
The results show that corporate environmental sustainability positively impacts financial, customer, learning and inter‐business process performance, with market orientation, especially customer and competitor orientation, strengthening corporate environmental sustainability's influence, except on inter‐business process performance.

Impact of carboxylesterase 1 genetic polymorphism on trandolapril activation in human liver and the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in healthy volunteers

open access: yesClinical and Translational Science, 2021
Trandolapril, an angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor prodrug, needs to be activated by carboxylesterase 1 (CES1) in the liver to exert its intended therapeutic effect.

Exposure Pattern Determines Methamphetamine‐Induced Right Ventricular Dysfunction and Vascular Remodeling

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 3, June 2026.
Chronic methamphetamine (MA) exposure caused mild, compensated pulmonary hypertension, whereas binge‐and‐crash exposure produced severe PAH with right‐ventricular dysfunction and marked vascular remodeling. Binge‐crash rats showed elevated plasma HMGB1, while in vitro methamphetamine triggered endothelial HMGB1 release that promoted smooth‐muscle ...

Assessing D‐Squame as a Minimally Invasive Technique to Evaluate the Cutaneous Immune Response mRNA in a Dog Model of Canine Atopic Dermatitis

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 37, Issue 3, Page 353-364, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Canine atopic dermatitis (cAD) is a multifactorial, inherited skin disease, estimated to affect ≤ 15% of dogs. Studies of skin messenger mRNA in cAD currently use invasive methods, including blood sampling and biopsy collection, whilst advances in human atopic dermatitis study methodology have demonstrated reliable use of minimally ...

Activation of Tenofovir Alafenamide and Sofosbuvir in the Human Lung and Its Implications in the Development of Nucleoside/Nucleotide Prodrugs for Treating SARS-CoV-2 Pulmonary Infection

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2021
ProTide technology is a powerful tool for the design of nucleoside/nucleotide analog prodrugs. ProTide prodrug design improves cell permeability and enhances intracellular activation.

ABCA12 Frameshift Deletion in Domestic Cats With Ichthyosis Fetalis

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 37, Issue 3, Page 365-374, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Ichthyosis fetalis (IF), also known as harlequin ichthyosis, is a rare and often fatal autosomal recessive congenital skin disorder. It is characterized by thickened, hard skin plaques and deep skin fissures that limit mobility and cause malformations of the eyes, lips and ears.

ACL is required for glucose-induced hepatic CES1 expression.

open access: yes, 2014
(A) C57BL/6 mice were injected i.v. with adenovirus expressing GFP or ChREBP. After 5 days, hepatic mRNA levels were determined by qPCR (n = 7 mice per group).

Increased serum carboxylesterase-1 levels are associated with metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease and metabolic syndrome in children with obesity

open access: yesItalian Journal of Pediatrics
Background Carboxylesterase 1(CES1) is expressed mainly in the liver and adipose tissue and is highly hypothesized to play an essential role in metabolism.
