Claudins and the Kidney [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2015
Claudins are tight-junction membrane proteins that function as both pores and barriers in the paracellular pathway in epithelial cells. In the kidney, claudins determine the permeability and selectivity of different nephron segments along the renal tubule. In the proximal tubule, claudins have a role in the bulk reabsorption of salt and water.

The Expression and Localization of ZO-1, Claudin 1, and Claudin 4 in the Pig Epididymis

open access: yesJournal of Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology, 2019
Tight junctions are constituents of the blood–epididymis barrier that play roles in regulating the unidirectional transcellular transport of ions, water, and solutes to maintain optimal conditions for sperm maturation and storage. Claudin 1 (Cldn1) and 4

Identification of key claudin genes associated with survival prognosis and diagnosis in colon cancer through integrated bioinformatic analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2023
The claudin multigene family is associated with various aberrant physiological and cellular signaling pathways. However, the association of claudins with survival prognosis, signaling pathways, and diagnostic efficacy in colon cancer remains poorly ...

The role and mechanism of claudins in cancer

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2022
Claudins are a tetraspan membrane protein multigene family that plays a structural and functional role in constructing tight junctions. Claudins perform crucial roles in maintaining cell polarity in epithelial and endothelial cell sheets and controlling ...

Tight Junction Modulating Bioprobes for Drug Delivery System to the Brain: A Review

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2020
The blood-brain barrier (BBB), which is composed of endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, and neurons, separates the brain extracellular fluid from the circulating blood, and maintains the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS).

Barriers built on claudins [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cell Science, 2004
The fundamental functions of epithelia and endothelia in multicellular organisms are to separate compositionally distinct compartments and regulate the exchange of small solutes and other substances between them. Tight junctions (TJs) between adjacent cells constitute the barrier to the passage of ions and molecules through the paracellular pathway and

cCPE Fusion Proteins as Molecular Probes to Detect Claudins and Tight Junction Dysregulation in Gastrointestinal Cell Lines, Tissue Explants and Patient-Derived Organoids

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2023
Claudins regulate paracellular permeability, contribute to epithelial polarization and are dysregulated during inflammation and carcinogenesis. Variants of the claudin-binding domain of Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (cCPE) are highly sensitive ...
