The Complement System of Agnathans

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Agnathans (lamprey and hagfish) are a group of primitive jawless fish. Jawed vertebrates possess adaptive immunity including immunoglobulins, while agnathans lack immunoglobulins but have alternative adaptive immunity in which variable lymphocyte ...

A Fibonacci analogue of the two's complement numeration system [PDF]

open access: yesRAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications 57 (2023) 12, 2022
Using the classic two's complement notation of signed integers, the fundamental arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication are identical to those for unsigned binary numbers. We introduce a Fibonacci-equivalent of the two's complement notation and we show that addition in this numeration system can be performed by a ...

Quantitative multiplex profiling of the complement system to diagnose complement‐mediated diseases

open access: yesClinical & Translational Immunology, 2020
Objectives Complement deficiencies are difficult to diagnose because of the variability of symptoms and the complexity of the diagnostic process. Here, we applied a novel ‘complementomics’ approach to study the impact of various complement deficiencies ...

Complement System: An Immunotherapy Target in Colorectal Cancer

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2022
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignant tumor and the second most fatal cancer worldwide. Several parts of the immune system contribute to fighting cancer including the innate complement system.

Be on Target: Strategies of Targeting Alternative and Lectin Pathway Components in Complement-Mediated Diseases

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
The complement system has moved into the focus of drug development efforts in the last decade, since its inappropriate or uncontrolled activation has been recognized in many diseases.

Combined anti-C1-INH and radiotherapy against glioblastoma

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2023
Background A more effective immune response against glioblastoma is needed in order to achieve better tumor control. Radiotherapy can induce anti-tumor mediated immune reactions, in addition to its dose response effects.

An update on the role of complement in hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2022
As a main producer of complement, the environment in the liver is greatly affected by the complement system. Although the complement system is considered to have the ability of nonself discrimination, remarkable studies have revealed the tight ...

New insights into the immune functions of podocytes: the role of complement

open access: yesMolecular and Cellular Pediatrics, 2023
Podocytes are differentiated epithelial cells which play an essential role to ensure a normal function of the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB). In addition to their adhesive properties in maintaining the integrity of the filtration barrier, they have ...

Implications of Complement Imbalance in COVID-19: A Molecular Mechanistic Discussion on the Importance of Complement Balance [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Immunology, 2023
Two central questions in COVID-19 treatment which should be considered are: “How does the imbalance of the complement system affect the therapeutic approaches?” and “Do we consider complement inhibitors in therapeutic protocols?”.

The Group Structure of Pivot and Loop Complementation on Graphs and Set Systems [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Combinatorics, v. 32, 1353-1367, 2011, 2009
We study the interplay between principal pivot transform (pivot) and loop complementation for graphs. This is done by generalizing loop complementation (in addition to pivot) to set systems. We show that the operations together, when restricted to single vertices, form the permutation group S_3.
