Periodontitis and metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with systemic effects that extend beyond the oral cavity and contribute to systemic immune and metabolic dysregulation. Chronic liver diseases, particularly metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its progressive phenotypes, have emerged as major global ...

NSAID ingestion augments training‐induced muscle hypertrophy and differentially affects muscle mRNA expression, but not strength gains, in trained men

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Schematic outlining the impact of NSAID ingestion on resistance exercise training‐induced changes in muscle morphology, function and gene networks relative to placebo ingestion in trained males. Abstract Non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely overused in sports.

Refining Genetic Instruments for Dietary Intake Mendelian Randomization Using Phenome‐Wide Association Studies

open access: yesGenetic Epidemiology, Volume 50, Issue 8, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Most Mendelian randomization (MR) of dietary intake use the full set of genome‐wide significant (GWS) variants in the instrumental variable (IV), likely biasing causal estimates due to pleiotropy. To characterize the common methods to handle pleiotropy in dietary intake MR, we conducted a scoping review of the literature on dietary intake MR ...

SMART: Speedy Measurement of Arabidopsis Rosette Traits

open access: yesThe Plant Phenome Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Most computer vision‐ and machine learning‐based plant phenotyping systems compute traits such as shape and size rather than the color distribution of the plant surface, even though color can provide important insights into plant physiology. Therefore, we developed Speedy Measurement of Arabidopsis Rosette Traits (SMART), an open‐source plant ...

Müller Glia Subtypes Define Neuro‐Glial Associations and Spatial Morphogen Axes in the Zebrafish Retina

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 11, November 2026.
Zebrafish Müller glia are heterogeneous in the early larval retina. Zebrafish Müller glia subtypes define a spatial axis of retinoic acid metabolism. Neuron‐associated glial programs identified in Zebrafish Müller glia are evolutionarily conserved in mammals. ABSTRACT Müller glia are instrumental macroglia of the vertebrate retina, once thought to be a

Cell Surface Markers Identify Astrocyte Subpopulations in the Adult Hippocampus With a Heterogeneous Response to Aging

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 11, November 2026.
ATP1B2 and GLAST identify two astrocyte subpopulations in the hippocampus with distinct molecular signatures. Transcriptomic shifts during aging differ between both subpopulations. Aged ATP1B2+ astrocytes rewire their metabolism while double‐positive aged astrocytes display a reduced synaptogenic capability.

Design Principles of Plant Thermotolerance: Integrating Photosynthesis, Reproduction, and Field Resilience in a Warming Climate

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 49, Issue 11, Page 8735-8750, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Global food security is increasingly threatened by climate change, as rising temperatures compromise the yields of major staple crops, including wheat, rice, and maize. Enhancing plant thermotolerance has therefore become a critical priority for sustaining agricultural productivity.

One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 16, Issue 10, Page 1982-1991, October 2026.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.
