HU of Streptococcus pneumoniae Is Essential for the Preservation of DNA Supercoiling

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
The histone-like protein HU is a conserved nucleoid-associated protein that is involved in the maintenance of the bacterial chromosome architecture. It is the only known nucleoid-associated protein in Streptococcus pneumoniae, but it has not been studied.

Phytochemical Profiling and Antibacterial Activity of Moroccan Monofloral Honeys Against Multidrug‐Resistant Uropathogens: In Vitro, ADMET, Molecular Docking, and Molecular Dynamics Approaches

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
Multidrug‐resistant bacteria infections require alternative antimicrobial strategies. This study evaluated the phenolic composition, antibacterial activity, and in silico properties of four Moroccan monofloral honeys. Carob honey showed the greatest phenolic diversity, whereas citrus honey contained the lowest polyphenolic content.

DNA supercoiling enhances DNA condensation by ParB proteins.

open access: yes
The ParABS system plays a critical role in bacterial chromosome segregation. The key component of this system, ParB, loads and spreads along DNA to form a local protein-DNA condensate known as a partition complex.

Integrated one‐pot CRISPR‐Cas detection: Addressing strategies and future prospects

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, Volume 4, Issue 5, September 2026.
Integrated one‐pot CRISPR‐Cas detection significantly simplifies workflows, reduces cross‐contamination risks, and shortens turnaround times, making it highly suitable for point‐of‐care testing (POCT) and resource‐limited settings. Key challenges include system compatibility issues between Cas proteins and isothermal amplification, limited multiplexing

Effects of physiological self-crowding of DNA on shape and biological properties of DNA molecules with various levels of supercoiling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
DNA in bacterial chromosomes and bacterial plasmids is supercoiled. DNA supercoiling is essential for DNA replication and gene regulation. However, the density of supercoiling in vivo is circa twice smaller than in deproteinized DNA molecules isolated ...

Conformational diversity in poly‐HAMP arrays and its implications for signal transduction

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Prokaryotic transmembrane receptors are built around a helical coiled‐coil backbone, with sensory, modulatory, and effector domains arranged along its length. The modulatory HAMP domain forms a parallel four‐helix coiled coil integrated into this backbone, typically connecting transmembrane segments with downstream cytosolic domains.

Cinnamic‐Hydroxamic‐Acid Derivatives Exhibit Antibiotic, Anti‐Biofilm, and Supercoiling Relaxation Properties by Targeting Bacterial Nucleoid‐Associated Protein HU

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Finding novel compounds and drug targets is crucial for antibiotic development. The nucleoid‐associated protein HU plays a significant role in bacterial DNA metabolism, supercoiling, and biofilm formation, making it a promising new target.

Structural and dynamic basis of a supercoiling-responsive DNA element

open access: yes, 2006
In both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, negative supercoiling of chromosomal DNA acts locally to regulate a variety of cellular processes, such as transcription, replication, recombination and response to environmental stresses.

ATP-dependent DNA supercoiling assay.

open access: yes, 2016
Supercoiling activities of DNA gyrases composed of WT-GyrA, Gly89Cys-GyrA, Ala91Val-GyrA or Asp95Gly-GyrA and WT-GyrB were confirmed. Relaxed pBR322 DNA was incubated with GyrA, GyrB, or both, of the subunits in the presence or absence of ATP.

Role of Supercoiling and Topoisomerases in DNA Knotting

open access: yesDNA
DNA knots are deleterious for living cells if not removed. Several theoretical and simulation approaches address the question of how topoisomerases select the intermolecular passages that preferentially lead to unknotting rather than to the knotting of ...
