Sensitization of Erythrocytes to Suicidal Erythrocyte Death Following Water Deprivation

open access: yesKidney & Blood Pressure Research, 2013
Background/Aims: Klotho deficiency results in excessive formation of 1,25(OH)2D3, accelerated ageing and early death. Moreover, klotho deficiency enhances eryptosis, the suicidal erythrocyte death characterized by phosphatidylserine exposure at the ...

Nonequilibrium Membrane Dynamics Induced by Active Protein Interactions and Chemical Reactions: A Review

open access: yesChemSystemsChem, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2025.
We discuss the spatiotemporal patterns and nonequilibrium fluctuations of membranes, particularly on theoretical analyses and simulations. Protein active forces enhance or suppress the membrane fluctuations. Active binding/unbinding of proteins can induce traveling waves and Turing patterns accompanied by membrane deformation.

The Uremic Toxin Acrolein Promotes Suicidal Erythrocyte Death

open access: yesKidney & Blood Pressure Research, 2013
Background: Anemia is a major complication of end stage renal disease. The anemia is mainly the result of impaired formation of erythrocytes due to lack of erythropoietin and iron deficiency.

Cell Death Mechanisms Produced by Carbon‐Based Nanoparticles

open access: yesJournal of Nanotechnology, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Using carbon‐based nanoparticles, such as diamond, graphite, fullerene, and nanotubes, has increased their research as possible strategies for drug delivery to control diseases, especially cancer. However, because these materials, when interacting with the living environment, release substances that are capable of inducing cell death by themselves, it ...

Stimulated Suicidal Erythrocyte Death in Arteritis

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2016
Background/Aims: Arteritis is an inflammatory disease of the vascular wall leading to ischemia and vascular occlusion. Complications of arteritis include anemia, which could, at least in theory, result from suicidal erythrocyte death or eryptosis, which ...

Prolonged Survival of Neutrophils Induced by Tumor‐Derived G‐CSF/GM‐CSF Promotes Immunosuppression and Progression in Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 11, Issue 46, December 11, 2024.
This study elucidates a novel mechanism whereby tumor‐derived G‐CSF and GM‐CSF induce delayed neutrophil apoptosis by activating the PI3K‐AKT signaling pathway. Delayed neutrophil apoptosis can facilitate the accumulation of immunosuppressive CXCR4+ neutrophils and impair CD8+ T cell immunity.

Hypoxia‐Mimicking Mediated Macrophage‐Elimination of Erythrocytes Promotes Bone Regeneration via Regulating Integrin αvβ3/Fe2+‐Glycolysis‐Inflammation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 11, Issue 45, December 4, 2024.
Longstanding compacted erythrocytes impair bone regeneration. This study employs the hypoxia‐mimetic agent DMOG to enhance macrophage‐elimination of erythrocytes by up‐regulating integrin αvβ3. Increased phagocytosed erythrocytes regulate macrophage intracellular Fe2+‐glycolysis‐inflammation, creating a favorable bone regenerative microenvironment ...

Effect of Thioridazine on Erythrocytes

open access: yesToxins, 2013
Background: Thioridazine, a neuroleptic phenothiazine with antimicrobial efficacy is known to trigger anemia. At least in theory, the anemia could result from stimulation of suicidal erythrocyte death or eryptosis, which is characterized by cell ...

Stimulation of Suicidal Erythrocyte Death by Phosphatase Inhibitor Calyculin A

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2016
Background/Aims: The serine/threonine protein phosphatase 1 and 2a inhibitor Calyculin A may trigger suicidal death or apoptosis of tumor cells. Similar to apoptosis of nucleated cells, erythrocytes may enter eryptosis, the suicidal erythrocyte death ...

Bile Acid-Induced Suicidal Erythrocyte Death

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2016
Background/Aims: In nucleated cells, bile acids may activate cation channels subsequently leading to entry of Ca2+. In erythrocytes, increase of cytosolic Ca2+ activity triggers eryptosis, the suicidal death of erythrocytes characterized by ...
