Suppression of Drug Resistance Reveals a Genetic Mechanism of Metabolic Plasticity in Malaria Parasites

open access: yesmBio, 2018
In the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, synthesis of isoprenoids from glycolytic intermediates is essential for survival. The antimalarial fosmidomycin (FSM) inhibits isoprenoid synthesis. In P.

Genomic Characterisation of Limosilactobacillus fermentum CRL2085 Unveiling Probiotic Traits for Application in Cattle Feed

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 5, October 2025.
A comprehensive genomic and phenotypic analysis of Limosilactobacillus fermentum CRL2085 revealed key probiotic and nutritional traits supporting its safe application in cattle feed. The strain harbors genes for stress tolerance, adhesion, exopolysaccharide production, and B‐vitamin biosynthesis, and efficiently metabolizes plant‐derived carbohydrates,

In Vitro and In Vivo Synergy of Fosmidomycin, a Novel Antimalarial Drug, with Clindamycin [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2002
ABSTRACT Fosmidomycin acts through inhibition of 1-deoxy- d -xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) reductoisomerase, a key enzyme of the nonmevalonate pathway of isoprenoid biosynthesis. It possesses potent antimalarial activity in vitro and in murine malaria.

Plastids in a Pinch: Coordinating Stress and Developmental Responses Through Retrograde Signalling

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 48, Issue 9, Page 6897-6911, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Plastids are crucial for fuelling and regulating plant growth and development. Photosynthesising chloroplasts provide energy for growth, while other plastids play additional key roles in various aspects of plant physiology. For function and development, plastids greatly depend on nucleus‐encoded proteins, and they can modulate the synthesis of

Metagenomic analysis reveals houseflies as indicators for monitoring environmental antibiotic resistance genes

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 6, December 2024.
Housefly body‐surface samples were collected from five distinct sites associated with human activities and subjected to metagenomic sequencing analysis. The results revealed that the composition of species and ARGs on the housefly body surface reflected the characteristics of their respective environments.

Increased antibiotic resistance gene abundance linked to intensive bacterial competition in the phyllosphere across an elevational gradient

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 6, December 2024.
Minimal research has been conducted on the phyllosphere resistome in relatively pristine environments. This study reports an increase in the abundance of phyllosphere resistomes along an elevational gradient in a national natural reserve, with implications for the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Abstract Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)

Duck gut metagenome reveals the microbiome signatures linked to intestinal regional, temporal development, and rearing condition

open access: yesiMeta, Volume 3, Issue 4, August 2024.
In this study, we constructed the first relatively comprehensive duck gut microbial gene catalog and metagenome‐assembled genomes using 375 duck gastrointestinal tract metagenomic samples from four different duck breeds across five intestinal segments under two distinct rearing conditions. Furthermore, the present study expands the understanding of the

GAPDH mediates drug resistance and metabolism in Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2022
Efforts to control the global malaria health crisis are undermined by antimalarial resistance. Identifying mechanisms of resistance will uncover the underlying biology of the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites that allow evasion of our most ...

Mutant noxy8 exposes functional specificities between the chloroplast chaperones CLPC1 and CLPC2 in the response to organelle stress and plant defence

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 47, Issue 7, Page 2334-2348, July 2024.
Abstract Chloroplast function is essential for growth, development, and plant adaptation to stress. Organelle stress and plant defence responses were examined here using noxy8 (nonresponding to oxylipins 8) from a series of Arabidopsis mutants. The noxy8 mutation was located at the CLPC2 gene, encoding a chloroplast chaperone of the protease complex ...

The Malaria Burden: A South African Perspective

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
Malaria is a deadly disease caused by protozoan pathogens of the Plasmodium parasite. Transmission to humans occurs through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 247 million cases of malaria were recorded worldwide in 2021, with approximately 619 000 malaria deaths. The initial
