Since its discovery more than 25 years ago, great progress has been made in our understanding of the unfolded protein response (UPR), a homeostatic mechanism that adjusts endoplasmic reticulum (ER) function to satisfy the physiological demands of the ...

Transcription of satellite DNAs in insects [PDF]
Chromatin condensation is an important regulatory mechanism of gene silencing as well as gene activation for the hundreds of functional protein genes harbored in heterochromatic regions of different insect species.

Conservation of peripheral nervous system formation mechanisms in divergent ascidian embryos
Ascidians with very similar embryos but highly divergent genomes are thought to have undergone extensive developmental system drift. We compared, in four species (Ciona and Phallusia for Phlebobranchia, Molgula and Halocynthia for Stolidobranchia), gene ...

Nascent RNA sequencing reveals mechanisms of gene regulation in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. [PDF]
Gene expression in Plasmodium falciparum is tightly regulated to ensure successful propagation of the parasite throughout its complex life cycle. The earliest transcriptomics studies in P.

A chicken homeo box gene with developmentally regulated expression [PDF]
Several homeo box sequences were isolated from a chicken (Gallus domesticus) genomic library. One phage, λGG7, was chosen for further study and the single homeo box sequence it contains was characterized. The sequence of the homeo box revealed it to be a distant member of the Antp class of homeo boxes.

Developmental regulation of proenkephalin gene expression in osteoblasts. [PDF]
Proenkephalin (PENK), a classically defined opioid gene, was originally thought to be expressed almost exclusively in the mature nervous and neuroendocrine systems. In the last few years, it was demonstrated, however, that high levels of PENK messenger RNA and PENK-derived peptides are expressed in embryonic mesenchymal tissues during differentiation ...

Dynamic association of NUP98 with the human genome. [PDF]
Faithful execution of developmental gene expression programs occurs at multiple levels and involves many different components such as transcription factors, histone-modification enzymes, and mRNA processing proteins.

A connection between stress and development in the multicelular prokaryote Streptomyces coelicolor [PDF]
Morphological changes leading to aerial mycelium formation and sporulation in the mycelial bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor rely on establishing distinct patterns of gene expression in separate regions of the colony.

Mapping Native R-Loops Genome-wide Using a Targeted Nuclease Approach
Summary: R-loops are three-stranded DNA:RNA hybrids that are implicated in many nuclear processes. While R-loops may have physiological roles, the formation of stable, aberrant R-loops has been observed in neurological disorders and cancers.

Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ating enzymes cooperate to coordinate development
The transcriptome is subject to rapid and massive changes during the transition between developmental stages. These changes require tight control to avoid the undesired reactivation of gene expression that is only important for previous developmental ...
