Electrophysiological properties of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus motoneurones controlling airway mucus secretion in rats

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Acidosis depolarises parasympathetic respiratory motoneurones in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) and increases their firing frequency by reducing TWIK‐2 channel conductance. Acidosis also activates astrocytes, which further enhance neuronal excitability through NMDA receptor‐dependent glutamatergic signalling.

A TREK‐1/AQP4/TRPA1/BDNF Signaling Axis Is Associated With Astrocytic Volume Transients, Synaptic Plasticity, and Spatial Memory

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 9, September 2026.
Astrocytic TREK‐1‐dependent volume transients contribute to hippocampal synaptic plasticity and memory formation. TRPA1‐mediated astrocytic calcium signaling is required for long‐term potentiation, while astrocytic BDNF is necessary and sufficient to support sustained synaptic plasticity.

Gliotransmission of D-serine promotes thirst-directed behaviors in Drosophila

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2022
Abstract Thirst emerges from a range of cellular changes that ultimately motivate an animal to consume water. Although thirst-responsive neuronal signals have been reported, the full complement of brain responses is unclear.

Arrays of microLEDs and astrocytes: biological amplifiers to optogenetically modulate neuronal networks reducing light requirement. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
In the modern view of synaptic transmission, astrocytes are no longer confined to the role of merely supportive cells. Although they do not generate action potentials, they nonetheless exhibit electrical activity and can influence surrounding neurons ...

Baseline Dynamics and Sleep Loss–Driven Changes of Electrocorticographic Aperiodic Properties Are Altered in Mice Lacking Neuroligin‐2

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 64, Issue 6, September 2026.
The current study used a wavelet‐leaders formalism to explore the role of Neuroligin‐2, a key protein of gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA)‐ergic synapses, in modulating the spectral power decay of electrocorticographic activity during wake and sleep states.

Altered calcium signaling in Bergmann glia contributes to spinocerebellar ataxia type-1 in a mouse model of SCA1

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2023
Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by an abnormal expansion of glutamine (Q) encoding CAG repeats in the ATAXIN1 (ATXN1) gene and characterized by progressive cerebellar ataxia, dysarthria, and eventual ...

Astrocytic mGluR5 Regulation of Synaptic Transmission is Activity‐Dependent in Adult Rats

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 8, August 2026.
In adulthood, astrocytic mGluR5 increases synaptic efficacy through presynaptic A2ARs. This occurs when a small number of synapses are activated simultaneously. This pathway is abolished when numerous synapses are recruited. ABSTRACT Data accumulated over the last two decades have demonstrated that astrocytes play key roles in the regulation of ...

Astrocyte IP3R2-dependent Ca2+ signaling is not a major modulator of neuronal pathways governing behavior.

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2014
Calcium-dependent release of gliotransmitters by astrocytes is reported to play a critical role in synaptic transmission and be necessary for long-term potentiation (LTP), long-term depression (LTD) and other forms of synaptic modulation that are ...

Microglia trigger astrocyte-mediated neuroprotection via purinergic gliotransmission [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2014
Microglia are highly sensitive to even small changes in the brain environment, such as invasion of non-hazardous toxicants or the presymptomatic state of diseases. However, the physiological or pathophysiological consequences of their responses remain unknown.

Primary cilia–extracellular vesicle crosstalk in Alzheimer's disease: Emerging mechanisms and biomarker potential

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition marked by cognitive decline and synaptic issues. Recent studies show primary cilia (PCs), sensory organelles present on the surface of most mammalian cells, act as a critical regulators of brain homeostasis and signaling.
