Chronic Hyperinsulinaemic Hypoglycaemia in Rats Is Accompanied by Increased Body Weight, Hyperleptinaemia, and Decreased Neuronal Glucose Transporter Levels in the Brain

open access: yesInternational Journal of Endocrinology, 2017
The brain is vulnerable to hypoglycaemia due to a continuous need of energy substrates to meet its high metabolic demands. Studies have shown that severe acute insulin-induced hypoglycaemia results in oxidative stress in the rat brain, when ...

The Therapeutic Effect and the Potential Mechanism of Flavonoids and Phenolics of Moringa oleifera Lam. Leaves against Hyperuricemia Mice

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-hyperuricemia effect and clarify the possible mechanisms of flavonoids and phenolics of MOL (MOL-FP) in mice.

Development of a novel in vitro insulin resistance model in primary human tenocytes for diabetic tendinopathy research [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2020
Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) had been reported to be associated with tendinopathy. However, the underlying mechanisms of diabetic tendinopathy still remain largely to be discovered.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

The development of a novel high-throughput membrane potential assay and a solid-supported membrane (SSM)-based electrophysiological assay to study the pharmacological inhibition of GLUT9/SLC2A9 isoforms in a drug discovery program

open access: yesSLAS Discovery
GLUT9/SLC2A9 is a urate transporter and takes a fundamental role in the maintenance of normal serum urate levels. GLUT9 is the sole transporter of reabsorbed urate from renal epithelial cells to blood, thus making it an ideal pharmacological target for ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

A Possible Therapeutic Application of the Selective Inhibitor of Urate Transporter 1, Dotinurad, for Metabolic Syndrome, Chronic Kidney Disease, and Cardiovascular Disease

open access: yesCells
The reabsorption of uric acid (UA) is mainly mediated by urate transporter 1 (URAT1) and glucose transporter 9 (GLUT9) in the kidneys. Dotinurad inhibits URAT1 but does not inhibit other UA transporters, such as GLUT9, ATP-binding cassette transporter G2

Effects of Ghrelin on Triglyceride Accumulation and Glucose Uptake in Primary Cultured Rat Myoblasts under Palmitic Acid-Induced High Fat Conditions

open access: yesInternational Journal of Endocrinology, 2015
This study aimed to study the effects of acylated ghrelin on glucose and triglyceride metabolism in rat myoblasts under palmitic acid- (PA-) induced high fat conditions.

Uncoupling of glycolysis from glucose oxidation accompanies the development of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

open access: yesMolecular Medicine, 2018
Background Alterations in cardiac energy metabolism contribute to the development and severity of heart failure (HF). In severe HF, overall mitochondrial oxidative metabolism is significantly decreased resulting in a reduced energy reserve.
