Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive fibrotic lung disease for which there is a lack of effective pharmacological treatments. Hirudin, a natural peptide extracted from leeches, has been used for broad pharmacological purposes. In

Leech therapy in the treatment of a penile haematoma in a stallion
Treatment of penile haematomas includes conventional therapy and/or surgical intervention which may not always result in the recovery of all penile functions.

Preparation of monoclonal antibodies to hirudin and hirudin peptides [PDF]
A panel of four monoclonal antibodies was obtained against hirudin, a potent and specific inhibitor of thrombin, by immunizing three groups of mice with protein conjugates made of recombinant desulfatohirudin (group I) or two synthetic peptides representing the C‐terminal sequences 40–65 (group II) and 52–65 (group III) of hirudin.

Scheme of preparation of D‐dimers and evaluation of D‐dimer‐bound thrombin activity. Thrombin bound to fibrin participates in ongoing fibrinogen transformation and its inhibition is impeded. Our detection system may aid in identifying patients at risk of recurrent thrombotic events or complications, regardless of the origin of the acute health problem.

Point of care testing of residual effect of antiplatelet therapy in trauma patients or during major surgery may result in improved clinical management of significant bleeding. We included 121 healthy individuals (57 females and 64 males, aged 22–65 years)

Summary ETV6‐related thrombocytopenia (ETV6‐RT) is an inherited platelet disorder caused by germline ETV6 variants. Despite recent progress, the mechanisms underlying platelet dysfunction in ETV6‐RT remain unclear. We investigated 12 patients from six families using functional assays, electron microscopy, quantitative proteomics and cytoskeletal ...

Albumin Restores Endothelial Cell Mitochondrial Morphology in Patients With Decompensated Cirrhosis
ABSTRACT Background & Aims Endothelial cell (EC) activation is a critical driver of disease progression in cirrhosis, contributing to acute decompensation (AD) and acute‐on‐chronic liver failure (ACLF). Although human albumin administration improves EC function in cirrhotic patients with hypoalbuminemia, its direct effects on ECs remain unclear.

Catabolism of hirudin and thrombin-hirudin complexes in the rat [PDF]
The metabolic fate of the anticoagulant protein, hirudin, and its complex with thrombin are presently unknown. Therefore we have labelled hirudin and human thrombin-hirudin complex with the residualizing label dilactitol-125I-tyramine (*I-DLT) in order to identify their tissue sites of catabolism in the rat.

A polymer coated cicaprost-eluting stent increases neointima formation and impairs vessel function in the rabbit iliac artery [PDF]
Drug-eluting stents have been successful in reducing in-stent restenosis but are not suitable for all lesion types and have been implicated in causing late stent thrombosis due to incomplete regeneration of the endothelial cell layer.
