Classification of cytokines as pro-versus anti-inflammatory might not apply to the pleiotropic effects of interleukin-10 (IL-10). Several reports suggest that IL-10 enhances the function of natural killer cells, which leads, through pathogen destruction, to increased antigen availability.

In addition to interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10 is considered as one of the most important cytokines regulating the proliferation and cellular characteristics of myeloma cells. It is still unclear from the clinical data how serum IL-10 levels of various stages of myeloma, are related to clinical manifestations of this disease.

IL‐10 and the resolution of infections
The Journal of Pathology, 2007AbstractChronic viral infections pose serious health concerns, as secondary complications such as immunodeficiencies and cancers are common. Treating such infections with conventional vaccine approaches has proved to be difficult. Studies in animals and humans suggest that vaccine failure is probably due to exhaustion of antiviral T cell responses ...

Cytokine & Growth Factor Reviews, 2010
In 2001, six immune mediators (IL-10, IL-19, IL-20, IL-22, IL-24, and IL-26) were grouped into the so-called IL-10 family of cytokines based on their similarities with respect to the structure and location of their encoding genes, their primary and secondary protein structures, and the receptor complexes used.

The EBV IL-10 homologue is a selective agonist with impaired binding to the IL-10 receptor
The Journal of Immunology, 1997Abstract BCRF1 is an EBV homologue of human IL-10 (hIL-10) and is known as viral IL-10 (vIL-10). As found earlier for the effects of vIL-10 on mouse mast cells and CD4+ T cells, the efficiency of inhibition by vIL-10 of IL-2 production by human CD4+ T cell clones is approximately 1000-fold diminished compared with hIL-10.

IL-10 immunosuppression in transplantation
Current Opinion in Immunology, 1995The description of IL-10 as an immunosuppressive cytokine that inhibits numerous T-cell and antigen-presenting cell functions has led to the investigation of the role of IL-10 in graft acceptance and rejection, in both manipulated and unmanipulated experimental systems.

A Deficiency of Placental IL-10 in Preeclampsia
The Journal of Immunology, 1999Abstract Accommodation of the fetoplacental unit in human pregnancy requires maternal immune tolerance to this “semiallograft”. Local antiplacental immunity is modified by synthesis of uncommon histocompatibility Ags (e.g., HLA-G), growth factors, and cytokines by the placenta.

Development of an ELISA for bovine IL-10
Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology, 2002The objective of the study was to develop an assay for bovine IL-10 that could be applied to analyses of immune responses and advance understanding of a variety of diseases of cattle. Recombinant bovine IL-10 (rbo IL-10) was transiently expressed in Cos-7 cells and shown to inhibit the synthesis of IFN gamma by bovine cells stimulated with antigen in ...

Soon after the principles of nonself immunological recognition were discovered, it was realized that the state of pregnancy seemingly presents a paradox. In an outbreed population, half of the fetal genes are paternal, thus the fetus may be considered a semi-allograft.
