Elucidating the role of MC3R in melanocortinergic appetite regulation in chicks
The melanocortin receptors are implicated in both food intake and energy expenditure regulation but the role of the melanocortin 3 receptor (MC3R) is less understood than that of the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R). In both rodents and chicks, the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) derivatives α‐ and β‐melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH ...

Lateral Hypothalamic Mc3R-Expressing Neurons Modulate Locomotor Activity, Energy Expenditure, and Adiposity in Male Mice [PDF]
AbstractThe central melanocortin system plays a crucial role in the control of energy balance. Although the decreased energy expenditure and increased adiposity of melanocortin-3 receptor (Mc3R)–null mice suggest the importance of Mc3R-regulated neurons in energy homeostasis, the roles for specific subsets of Mc3R neurons in energy balance have yet to ...

Stress alters hypothalamic gene expression in adolescent male Golden hamsters
Abstract In Golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), a two‐week exposure to chronic social stress in adolescence causes acceleration of agonistic behavior, enhanced adult aggression, impaired waiting impulsivity, and higher food intake, body fat, and long‐term increased body weight.

Construction of an American mink Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) library and sequencing candidate genes important for the fur industry [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) libraries continue to be invaluable tools for the genomic analysis of complex organisms. Complemented by the newly and fast growing deep sequencing technologies, they provide an excellent source of ...

Why does infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) occur with a variety of underlying conditions and why does it respond to adrenocorticotrophin hormone (ACTH)/corticosteroids? Our scoping review summarizes five hypotheses from the literature: gene/epigenetic regulation, stress/HPA axis activation, neuroinflammation/immune function, altered neuronal ...

Genomic and phenotypic signatures of climate adaptation in an Anolis lizard [PDF]
Integrated knowledge on phenotype, physiology and genomic adaptations is required to understand the effects of climate on evolution. The functional genomic basis of organismal adaptation to changes in the abiotic environment, its phenotypic consequences,

Maternal Nutritional Environment and the Development of the Melanocortin System
Maternal metabolic impairments are related to an increased risk of obesity in the offspring throughout life, and changes in the development of the melanocortin system may be one of the mechanisms that promote increased food intake in the long term, leading to a positive energy balance and increased fat deposition.

Co-occurrence of Two Partially Inactivating Polymorphisms of MC3R Is Associated With Pediatric-Onset Obesity [PDF]
Both human linkage studies and MC3R knockout mouse models suggest that the MC3R may play an important role in energy homeostasis. Here we show that among 355 overweight and nonoverweight children, 8.2% were double homozygous for a pair of missense MC3R sequence variants (Thr6Lys and Val81Ile).

The role of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurones in feeding behaviour
The precursor protein, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), produces many biologically active peptides via a series of enzymatic steps in a tissue-specific manner, yielding the melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSHs), corticotrophin (ACTH) and β-endorphin.
