Vitamin D Attenuates Ischemia/Reperfusion-Induced Cardiac Injury by Reducing Mitochondrial Fission and Mitophagy

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2020
Myocardial infarction is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although myocardial reperfusion after ischemia (I/R) is an effective method to save ischemic myocardium, it can cause adverse reactions, including increased oxidative stress

Identification and characterization of the mitochondrial RNA polymerase and transcription factor in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2011
We have characterized the mitochondrial transcription factor (Mtf1) and RNA polymerase (Rpo41) of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Deletion mutants show Mtf1 or Rpo41 to be essential for cell growth, cell morphology and mitochondrial membrane potential. Overexpression of Mtf1 and Rpo41 can induce mitochondrial transcription.

Mitochondrial Fission and Mitophagy Coordinately Restrict High Glucose Toxicity in Cardiomyocytes

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Hyperglycemia-induced mitochondrial dysfunction plays a key role in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Injured mitochondrial segments are separated by mitochondrial fission and eliminated by autophagic sequestration and subsequent degradation ...

Mitochondrial fusion‐ and fission‐related protein expression in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2022
Mitochondria in the skeletal muscle are essential for maintaining metabolic plasticity and function. Mitochondrial quality control encompasses the dynamics of the biogenesis and remodeling of mitochondria, characterized by the constant fission and fusion

MTP18 is a Novel Regulator of Mitochondrial Fission in CNS Neuron Development, Axonal Growth, and Injury Responses

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
The process of mitochondrial fission-fusion has been implicated in diverse neuronal roles including neuronal survival, axon degeneration, and axon regeneration.

Renal cold storage followed by transplantation impairs expression of key mitochondrial fission and fusion proteins. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
The majority of transplanted kidneys are procured from deceased donors which all require exposure to cold storage (CS) for successful transplantation.

NR4A1 Promotes Diabetic Nephropathy by Activating Mff-Mediated Mitochondrial Fission and Suppressing Parkin-Mediated Mitophagy

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2018
Background/Aims: Disrupted mitochondrial dynamics, including excessive mitochondrial fission and mitophagy arrest, has been identified as a pathogenic factor in diabetic nephropathy (DN), although the upstream regulatory signal for mitochondrial fission ...

Mitochondrial fission during mitophagy requires both inner and outer mitofissins

open access: yesEMBO Reports
Mitophagy maintains mitochondrial homeostasis through the selective degradation of damaged or excess mitochondria. Recently, we identified mitofissin/Atg44, a mitochondrial intermembrane space-resident fission factor, which directly acts on lipid ...

Nrf2 protects against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in diabetic rats by inhibiting Drp1-mediated mitochondrial fission

open access: yesOpen Medicine, 2023
Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are considered to be two main drivers of diabetic myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (DM + MIRI). Nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) play central ...
