Effectiveness of Multivitamins vs Folic Acid on Prevention of Neural Tube Defects in Mouse Genetic Models and Human Organoids

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 8, 9 February 2026.
Folic acid (FA) and multivitamins/minerals (MVM) are recommended for the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs). Using a novel human neural tube‐like organoid system and mouse models, the study compares the effectiveness of two supplements on NTDs and cellular behaviors.

Mechanical shock during egg de-adhesion and post-ovulatory ageing contribute to spontaneous autopolyploidy in white sturgeon culture (Acipenser transmontanus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Spontaneous autopolyploidy, a 1.5x increase in genome size resulting from second polar body retention after fertilization, has been documented in cultured sturgeons, with the proportion of spontaneous autopolyploid progeny ranging widely among maternal ...

Progesterone improves the number and quality of hormone induced Fowler toad (Bufo fowleri) oocytes

open access: yesReproductive Biology and Endocrinology, 2006
Combinations of progesterone, lutenizing hormone releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa), human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), and the dopamine-2 (DA2) receptor antagonist 1-[1-[4,4-bis(4-Fluorophenyl)butyl]-4-piperidinyl]-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazol-2-one ...

Neurogenesis and the Epigenetic Landscape: Role of Histone Modifications and Chromatin Remodeling

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
Histone methylation and acetylation modulate gene expression by inducing chromatin condensation or relaxation, which in turn regulates transcriptional activity and impacts neurogenesis. ABSTRACT Aims The purpose of this review is to examine how epigenetic regulation particularly chromatin modification and histone methylation controls gene expression ...

Suv4-20h Histone Methyltransferases Promote Neuroectodermal Differentiation by Silencing the Pluripotency-Associated Oct-25 Gene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Post-translational modifications (PTMs) of histones exert fundamental roles in regulating gene expression. During development, groups of PTMs are constrained by unknown mechanisms into combinatorial patterns, which facilitate transitions from uncommitted

Dolutegravir induces FOLR1 expression during brain organoid development

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience
During the first month of pregnancy, the brain and spinal cord are formed through a process called neurulation. However, this process can be altered by low serum levels of folic acid, environmental factors, or genetic predispositions.

Vangl2 disruption alters the biomechanics of late spinal neurulation leading to spina bifida in mouse embryos

open access: yesDisease Models & Mechanisms, 2018
Human mutations in the planar cell polarity component VANGL2 are associated with the neural tube defect spina bifida. Homozygous Vangl2 mutation in mice prevents initiation of neural tube closure, precluding analysis of its subsequent roles in ...

Large, long range tensile forces drive convergence during [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Indirect evidence suggests that blastopore closure during gastrulation of anamniotes, including amphibians such as Xenopus laevis, depends on circumblastoporal convergence forces generated by the marginal zone (MZ), but direct evidence is lacking.

EVIDENCE OF COMMUNAL OVIPOSITION AND NEST ABANDONMENT IN THE NORTHERN TWO-LINED SALAMANDER (EURYCEA BISLINEATA, (GREEN, 1818)) IN NORTHEASTERN CONNECTICUT [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Most plethodontid salamanders oviposit their eggs in an individual nest and attend the clutch until hatching. Here, we describe aspects of the reproduction of Eurycea bislineata (Northern Two-lined Salamander) from three field sites in northeastern ...
