Spinal NKCC1 blockade inhibits TRPV1-dependent referred allodynia
Background The Na+, K+, 2Cl- type I cotransporter (NKCC1) and TRPV1 receptors, at the level of the dorsal horn, have been implicated in mediating allodynia in response to an inflammatory insult.

Background Our aim was to investigate the effects of the protein expression and the function of sodium, potassium, and chloride co-transporter (NKCC1) in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) after activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 receptor

The roles of sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter isoform-1 in acute lung injury
Acute lung injury (ALI) is often characterized by severe lung inflammation and pulmonary edema with poor gas exchange and hypoxemia. Alveolar inflammation and water flooding are, in fact, notable features of ALI pathogenesis.

Mice lacking NKCC1 have normal olfactory sensitivity [PDF]
When olfactory receptor neurons respond to odors, a depolarizing Cl(-) efflux is a substantial part of the response. This requires that the resting neuron accumulate Cl(-) against an electrochemical gradient. In isolated olfactory receptor neurons, the Na(+)+K(+)+2Cl(-) cotransporter NKCC1 is essential for Cl(-) accumulation.

Inflammation in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: An Immunometabolic Mechanistic Framework and Clinical Implications. [PDF]
Systemic metabolic dysfunction and comorbidities may act as upstream modulators converging on inflammatory activation, which is closely intertwined with excessive CSF production and impaired clearance, potentially contributing to sustained ICP elevation.

Regulation of the volume and electrolyte composition of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is vital for brain development and function. The Na-K-Cl co-transporter NKCC1 in the choroid plexus (ChP) plays key roles in regulating CSF volume by co-transporting ...

Cryo-EM structure of the potassium-chloride cotransporter KCC4 in lipid nanodiscs. [PDF]
Cation-chloride-cotransporters (CCCs) catalyze transport of Cl- with K+ and/or Na+across cellular membranes. CCCs play roles in cellular volume regulation, neural development and function, audition, regulation of blood pressure, and renal function.

Role of SPAK–NKCC1 signaling cascade in the choroid plexus blood–CSF barrier damage after stroke
Background The mechanisms underlying dysfunction of choroid plexus (ChP) blood–cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier and lymphocyte invasion in neuroinflammatory responses to stroke are not well understood.

NKCC1 cotransporters: keeping an ‘ion’ them
The sodium–potassium–chloride cotransporter NKCC1 has a track record of bringing the ions it is named after into the cell. But recently, scientists discovered that the cotransporter brings a substantial amount of water into the cell as well. In a recent issue of The Journal of Physiology, Hamann et al. (2010) analysed cell volumes of human pigmented

AbstractObjectiveA pathological excitatory action of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been observed in epilepsy. Blocking the Cl− importer NKCC1 with bumetanide is expected to reduce the neuronal intracellular Cl− concentration ([Cl−]i) and thereby attenuate the excitatory GABA response. Accordingly, several clinical
