The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) is a purinergic receptor that plays a central role in the inflammatory response. Activation of the P2X7R releases pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1β (IL-1β), which have been shown to underlie the pathogenesis of a number of neurodegenerative disorders.
