Adenovirus-mediated suppression of hypothalamic glucokinase affects feeding behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Glucokinase (GK), the hexokinase involved in glucosensing in pancreatic β-cells, is also expressed in arcuate nucleus (AN) neurons and hypothalamic tanycytes, the cells that surround the basal third ventricle (3V).

Proopiomelanocortin, Its Derived Peptides, and the Skin

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 1996
Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is a protein synthesized predominately in the pituitary gland but also in a variety of other tissues, including the skin. Through enzyme-mediated cleavage that varies among cell types, POMC can give rise to at least eight distinct peptides whose biologic roles are incompletely delineated.

CNS Control of Glucose Metabolism: Response to Environmental Challenges [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Over the last 15 years, considerable work has accumulated to support the role of the CNS in regulating postprandial glucose levels. As discussed in the first section of this review, the CNS receives and integrates information from afferent neurons ...

PCSK1 Mutations and Human Endocrinopathies: From Obesity to Gastrointestinal Disorders. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Prohormone convertase 1/3, encoded by the PCSK1 gene, is a serine endoprotease that is involved in the processing of a variety of proneuropeptides and prohormones. Humans who are homozygous or compound heterozygous for loss-of-function mutations in PCSK1

Pro-opiomelanocortin and ACTH–cortisol dissociation during pediatric cardiac surgery

open access: yesEndocrine Connections
In critically ill adults, high plasma cortisol in the face of low ACTH coincides with high pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) levels. Glucocorticoids further lower ACTH without affecting POMC.

Evaluation of behavior in transgenic mouse models to understand human congenital pain conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: Containing a brain for signal processing and decision making, and a peripheral component for sensation and response, the nervous system provides higher organisms a powerful method of interacting with their environment.
