Current Opinion in Immunology, 1994
The selectins are three related receptors that initiate rolling of leukocytes on activated platelets or endothelium through Ca(2+)-dependent recognition of cell surface carbohydrates. Cell adhesion may be enhanced by a limited number of membrane glycoproteins that present high affinity carbohydrate ligands to specific selectins.

Blood, 2009
In this issue of Blood , Yang and colleagues provide new insights into how plasma fibrinogen, fibrinogen uptake, and integrin signaling regulate P-selectin in circulating platelets.[1][1] Membrane P-selectin expression is considered one of the most reliable markers of murine and human ...

Serum L-selectin and P-selectin levels in lymphomas
Haematologia, 2000The migration of normal and malignant lymphoid cells is governed by specific adhesion molecules. Selectins comprise a family of adhesion receptors expressed by leukocytes, platelets and endothelial cells. In this study, the serum levels of soluble L-selectin and P-selectin were measured in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease and ...

The selectin–selectin ligand axis in tumor progression
Cancer and Metastasis Reviews, 2008This review will document that the selectin-selectin ligand axis is actively involved in tumor progression and drives this process. The involvement of selectins and their ligands in tumor progression takes place at three levels which will be reviewed: Interaction of tumor cells with platelets and leukocytes resulting in the formation of circulating ...

The selectins are cell surface lectins that have evolved to mediate the adhesion of white blood cells to endothelial cells and platelets under flow. They recognize fucosylated, sialylated and in some cases sulfated ligands expressed on scaffold glycoproteins serving as functional counter-receptors.
