Sphingosine Kinases/Sphingosine 1-Phosphate Signaling in Hepatic Lipid Metabolism [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Pharmacology Reports, 2017
The ever-increasing prevalence of metabolic diseases such as dyslipidemia and diabetes in the western world continues to be of great public health concern. Biologically active sphingolipids, such as sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) and ceramide, are important regulators of lipid metabolism.

The nitty‐gritty of vascular permeability in cancer: targeting blood endothelium to control metastases

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Blood vascular permeability is a hallmark of cancer and acts as an active driver of metastatic dissemination. Metastasis accounts for the vast majority of cancer deaths, yet most work has focussed on tumour‐intrinsic traits and angiogenesis, while the specific contribution of endothelial barrier regulation to intravasation and extravasation remains ...

Redistribution of Sphingosine 1-Phosphate by Sphingosine Kinase 2 Contributes to Lymphopenia [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Immunology, 2010
Abstract Sphingosine kinases (SKs) 1 and 2 produce high concentrations of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) in blood and lymph. In contrast, S1P concentrations in lymphoid tissues are kept low by the S1P-degrading activity of the S1P-lyase. These differences in S1P concentrations drive lymphocyte circulation.

Association Between the Root Canal Microbiome and Apical Lesion Size: An Observational Shotgun Metagenomic Study

open access: yesInternational Endodontic Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim The aim was to characterize the taxonomic and functional composition of the microbiome involved in primary endodontic infections and to evaluate their association with the periapical lesion size using shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Methodology Samples from primary root canal infections diagnosed with apical periodontitis were analysed ...

Role of Sphingosine Kinase 1 and Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Axis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is primarily diagnosed in the latter stages of disease progression and is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Thus, there is a need to find biomarkers of early HCC as well as the development of more effective treatments for the disease.

Advances in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus: Biologicals, small‐molecular agents, and cell‐depleting therapies coming to the clinic

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE; lupus) remains a particular challenge for the practicing clinician on account of its chronic undulating and unpredictable course, its diverse manifestations, and—until recently—limited treatment options all associated with considerable downsides.

Understanding exosomes in diabetic wound healing

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Diabetic wounds signify a major complication of diabetes mellitus, characterized by chronic inflammation, compromised angiogenesis, and high risk of infection, amputation, and mortality. Contemporary therapies remain limited in efficacy and durability.

Histiocytes: Multifaceted Regulators of Health and Disease

open access: yesVeterinary Clinical Pathology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The mononuclear phagocyte system encompasses macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), and monocytes. Tissue‐resident macrophages and dendritic cells arise during embryogenesis and are replenished either through self‐renewal or by monocytes during inflammation.

14‐3‐3 proteins: Regulators of cardiac excitation–contraction coupling and stress responses

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend 14‐3‐3 protein interactions in cardiac regulation. Schematic representation of 14‐3‐3 binding partners in excitation–contraction coupling, transcriptional regulation/development and stress response pathways. Asterisks indicate targets where the exact 14‐3‐3 binding site is unknown.
