Tau Protein and Frontotemporal Dementias
2021Filamentous inclusions of tau protein are found in cases of inherited and sporadic frontotemporal dementias (FTDs). Mutations in MAPT, the tau gene, cause approximately 5% of cases of FTD. They proved that dysfunction of tau protein is sufficient to cause neurodegeneration and dementia.

Neurobiology of Aging, 1994The etiology of Alzheimer's disease is still unknown. Because the disease is specific for human brain, a rational search for early diagnosis or prevention is very difficult. This calls for the development of cellular models that mimick the degeneration of neurons in AD.

Aggregation of tau protein by aluminum
Brain Research, 1993Aluminum has been detected in Alzheimer neurofibrillary tangles, but the significance of its presence is unknown. The principal component of tangles is the paired helical filament (PHF), comprised of tau protein. We investigated whether aluminum could induce tau protein to form filaments or aggregate.
