A developmental profile of tocol accumulation in oat seeds

Oats are a good source of many vitamins and minerals, including compounds that collectively constitute vitamin E, the tocols. Tocols are comprised of two subgroups, tocopherols and tocotrienols. Due to their potent antioxidant properties, attention has been given to the health benefits of tocols in oats.

AbstractIn tests with purified menhaden oil at 37C and with squalene at 37C and 50C, unsubstituted tocol, 7,8‐dimethyl tocol (γ‐tocol), and 8‐methyl tocol (σ‐tocol) were superior antioxidants to 5,7‐dimethyl tocol and 5,7,8‐trimethyl tocol (α‐tocol).

Separations of tocopherols and methylated tocols on cyclodextrin-bonded silica

Abstract α-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols (methyl-substituted tocols) and 5,7-dimethyltocol were separated by normal-phase HPLC on β- or γ-cyclodextrin-bonded silica (CDS) with fluorescence detection. The HPLC behavior of the tocol components was studied under various mobile phase conditions.
