Effects of 17α‐Ethinylestradiol on Development and Gonadal Differentiation in the Estuarine Mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 345, Issue 2, Page 148-161, March 2026.
ABSTRACT In fish, sex determination and gonadal development are controlled by various genetic and environmental factors. In this study, experiments were conducted on the estuarine mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) to investigate gonadal differentiation following exposure to the synthetic estrogen, 17α‐ethinylestradiol (EE2).

The Role of Plzf in Spermatogonial Stem Cell Maintenance and Differentiation: Mapping the Transcriptional Dynamics and Key Interactions

open access: yesCells
Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) sustain and modulate spermatogenesis through intricate signaling pathways and transcription factors. Promyelocytic leukemia zinc-finger (Plzf, also known as Zbtb16) has been identified as a critical transcription factor ...

Transgenerational Heat Exposure Triggers Unexpected Compensatory Sex Ratio Responses in a Temperature‐Sensitive Fish Under Climate Warming

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 3, March 2026.
Rising temperatures can unbalance the number of males and females in species whose sex is influenced by the environment. In a decade‐long experiment with European sea bass, we found that heat during development produces more males, but the thermal history of parents—especially fathers—can unexpectedly push offspring sex ratios back in the opposite ...

Technological Innovations and Applications of Spatial Transcriptomics in Livestock and Poultry Research

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 14-27, February 2026.
The paper is divided into three main sections: a review of the development of spatial transcriptomics technology, its applications in livestock and poultry research, and its future prospects. This article provides an overview of the current state of spatial transcriptomics in animal research, exploring its integration with multiomics technologies as ...

RNA-binding protein IGF2BP1 is required for spermatogenesis in an age-dependent manner

open access: yesCommunications Biology
Post-transcriptional regulation mediated by RNA binding proteins is crucial for male germline development. Insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1), an RNA binding protein, is specifically expressed in human and mouse male gonads and

The absence of both RIBC1 and RIBC2 induces decreased sperm motility and litter size in male mice

open access: yesAndrology, Volume 14, Issue 2, Page 545-554, February 2026.
Abstract Background RIBC1 (RIB43A domain with coiled‐coils 1) and RIBC2 (RIB43A domain with coiled‐coils 2) are homolog proteins of RIB43a which is localized to microtubules in the cilia and flagella of unicellular organisms. Cryo‐electron microscopy and artificial intelligence studies showed that RIBC1 and RIBC2 are microtubule inner proteins (MIPs ...

SALL4 is co-expressed with PLZF and LIN28 in clones of undifferentiated spermatogonia.

open access: yes, 2013
(A–D) SALL4 and PLZF were co-expressed in most undifferentiated spermatogonia. Small fractions of As and Apr spermatogonia showed molecular heterogeneity (*).

Proteomic analysis of the zone of degeneration at the mitosis–meiosis transition stage in wild‐caught male catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula), correlated with an unusually high‐water temperature in the English Channel

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 108, Issue 2, Page 676-693, February 2026.
Abstract In the context of current global change, variations in water temperature are one of the environmental conditions with serious consequences for marine life, including reproductive processes. In the small spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula, spermatogenesis occurs in spermatocysts composed of synchronously developing germ cells associated ...

Establishment and optimization of the two‐step induction system for generating primordial germ cell‐like cells from chicken embryonic stem cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 16, Issue 1, Page 161-177, January 2026.
This study optimizes a two‐step induction system to generate PGCLCs from chicken ESCs. The induced cells express germline markers and migrate to gonads in ovo, offering a novel approach for avian genetic resource conservation. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the progenitor cells of sperm and eggs.

Puma and Trail/Dr5 pathways control radiation-induced apoptosis in distinct populations of testicular progenitors.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
Spermatogonia- stem cells and progenitors of adult spermatogenesis- are killed through a p53-regulated apoptotic process after gamma-irradiation but the death effectors are still poorly characterized.
