Iron and Other Metal Ions in Human Health and Disease

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2026.
Iron, copper, zinc, and calcium orchestrate cellular function through distinct yet cooperative mechanisms: redox‐active iron and copper cycle between oxidation states to act as Fenton catalysts and electron carriers in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS); redox‐inert zinc serves as a structural component of zinc‐finger proteins and a catalytic cofactor ...

Why Circulating Interleukin‐6 Is Not Yet a Standalone Clinically Actionable Biomarker in HFrEF: A Context‐of‐Use Review

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, Volume 56, Issue 10, October 2026.
Clinical and translational readiness of IL‐6 measurement in HFrEF. ABSTRACT Background Interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) is frequently measured in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), but its clinical utility remains unclear. Objectives To assess IL‐6 as a biomarker in HFrEF, with emphasis on the effect of treatments (pharmacodynamics) and ...

Ultrafast python‐integrated single‐entity electrochemical sensor for detecting glycated albumin

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 19, Page 5898-5907, October 2026.
Traditional biosensors suffer from the fact that recognition receptors are immobilised and that they denature on electrodes. Instead here we use receptors freely in solution, minimising surface compression and preserving activity to boost signal efficiency. Python‐driven processing turns the electrochemical response into a rapid, robust readout.

Regulation of Urate Homeostasis by Membrane Transporters

open access: yes
Uric acid is the final purine metabolite in humans. Serum urate levels are regulated by a balance between urate production, mainly in the liver, and its excretion via the kidneys and small intestine.

Effect of hypouricaemic and hyperuricaemic drugs on the renal urate efflux transporter, multidrug resistance protein 4.

open access: yes, 2008
Contains fulltext : 70432.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The xanthine oxidase inhibitors allopurinol and oxypurinol are used to treat hyperuricaemia, whereas loop and thiazide diuretics can cause ...

Lactobacillus paracasei N1115 alleviates hyperuricemia in mice: regulation of uric acid metabolism as well as its impact on gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a worldwide metabolic disorder characterized by abnormally elevated serum uric acid (SUA) levels, and recent studies suggest that probiotics have potential in mitigating HUA.

Zurampic Protects Pancreatic β-Cells from High Uric Acid Induced-Damage by Inhibiting URAT1 and Inactivating the ROS/AMPK/ERK Pathways

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2018
Background/Aims: Zurampic is a US FDA approved drug for treatment of gout. However, the influence of Zurampic on pancreatic β-cells remains unclear. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of Zurampic on high uric acid-induced damage of pancreatic β ...

Virtual screening and biological evaluation of natural products as urate transporter 1 (URAT1) inhibitors

open access: yes
Hyperuricemia is mainly caused by insufficient renal urate excretion. Urate transporter 1 (URAT1), an organic anion transporter, is the main protein responsible for urate reabsorption.

Immunoreactivity of urate transporters, GLUT9 and URAT1, is located in epithelial cells of the choroid plexus of human brains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
香川大学Kagawa University博士(医学)Abstract It has been suggested that urate plays a protective role in neurons, while hyperuricemia is correlated with atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.
