Biology of AQP4 and Anti‐AQP4 Antibody: Therapeutic Implications for NMO

open access: yesBrain Pathology, 2013
AbstractThe water channel aquaporin‐4 (AQP4) is the target of the immunoglobulin G autoantibody (AQP4‐IgG) in neuromyelitis optica (NMO). AQP4 is expressed in foot processes of astrocytes throughout the central nervous system, as well as in skeletal muscle and epithelial cells in kidney, lung and gastrointestinal organs.

Intermittent Fasting Protects against Alzheimer’s Disease Possible through Restoring Aquaporin-4 Polarity

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2017
The impairment of amyloid-β (Aβ) clearance in the brain plays a causative role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Polarity distribution of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is important to remove Aβ from brain.

Toward New AQP4 Inhibitors: ORI-TRN-002

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2023
Cerebral edema is a life-threatening condition that can cause permanent brain damage or death if left untreated. Existing therapies aim at mitigating the associated elevated intracranial pressure, yet they primarily alleviate pressure rather than prevent edema formation. Prophylactic anti-edema therapy necessitates novel drugs targeting edema formation.

Characterization of aquaporin 4 protein expression and localization in tissues of the dogfish (Squalus acanthias).

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2012
The role of aquaporin water channels in Elasmobanchs such as the dogfish Squalus acanthias is completely unknown. This investigation determines the expression and cellular and sub-cellular localization of AQP4 protein in dogfish tissues.

Correlations of AQP4 expression and polymorphism with diabetic retinopathy.

open access: yesEuropean review for medical and pharmacological sciences, 2021
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of aquaporin 4 (AQP4) rs200498749, rs149465 and rs650217 polymorphisms and gene expression with diabetic retinopathy (DR).A total of 400 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) treated in our hospital were enrolled in this study. All subjects were divided into two groups, including DM group (n=200,

Müller cell markers in aqueous humor of patients with type-2 macular telangiectasia

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology
Purpose: To investigate the pathogenesis of type-2 macular telangiectasia (MacTel) by comparing the levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), aquaporin-4 (AQP4), and K+ inwardly rectifying channel 4.1 (Kir4.1) in the aqueous humor of diagnosed ...

Aquaporin 4 expression is downregulated in large bovine ovarian follicles

open access: yesJournal of Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology, 2020
Aquaporin channels (AQPs) are known to play an important role in the development of ovarian follicles through their function in water transport pathways. Compared to other AQPs, research on the role of AQP4 in female reproductive physiology, particularly

The role of astrocytic aquaporin-4 in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory

open access: yesFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, 2016
Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is the predominant water channel expressed by astrocytes in the central nervous system. AQP4 is widely expressed throughout the brain, especially at the blood-brain barrier where AQP4 is highly polarized to astrocytic foot processes ...

Aquaporin-4 Expression during Toxic and Autoimmune Demyelination

open access: yesCells, 2020
The water channel protein aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is required for a normal rate of water exchange across the blood–brain interface. Following the discovery that AQP4 is a possible autoantigen in neuromyelitis optica, the function of AQP4 in health and disease
