Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are central nervous system inflammatory disorders causing significant morbidities and mortality. The majority of NMOSD patients have autoimmunity against aquaporin-4 (AQP4), evidenced by seropositivity for ...

Aquaporin4 (AQP4) in brain disorder
Two third of our body is composed of water molecules. Regulation of water and electrolytes is indeed the most important homeostatic functions. Many diseases, such as heart failure, are associated with disturbance in fluid homeostasis. Surprisingly, water dynamics inside the brain is still largely unknown.

Nitric oxide conduction by the brain aquaporin AQP4 [PDF]
AbstractInvolvement of aquaporins in gas conduction across the membrane and the physiological significance of this process have attracted marked attention from both experimental and theoretical studies. Previous work demonstrated that AQP1 is permeable to both CO2 and O2.

A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis of the Recurrence of Autoimmune Encephalitis
ABSTRACT Objective Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a disease with a potential for recurrence, and patients receive immunotherapy to prevent it. However, there is no consensus on the duration of immunotherapy. This study aimed to determine the recurrence rate and identify the risk factors for AE to provide guidance on the duration of immunotherapy ...

Objectives: In this study, we investigated AQP4 expression in injured astrocytes in vitro, as well as the influence of AQP4 levels on pathology using gene silencing. Methods: Astrocytes were cultured and the mechanical scratch method was used to simulate an injury.

The Structure of AQP4 and Its Relationship to Disease
Aquaporin‐4 (AQP4) is the most common water channel protein in the central nervous system (Flippidis, Carozza, & Rekate, 2016). It is highly concentrated in the cell membrane of the astrocytic endfeet, which form the blood‐brain barrier (BBB) and help protect the brain from toxins (Mader & Brimberg, 2019; Woodruff & Götz, 2018).

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Background In 70-80% of cases, neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is associated with highly specific serum auto-antibodies to aquaporin-4 (termed AQP4-Ab or NMO-IgG).
