Cerebrospinal fluid antibodies to aquaporin-4 in neuromyelitis optica and related disorders: frequency, origin, and diagnostic relevance

open access: yesJournal of Neuroinflammation, 2010
Background In 70-80% of cases, neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is associated with highly specific serum auto-antibodies to aquaporin-4 (termed AQP4-Ab or NMO-IgG).

The effect of aquaporin-4 mis-localization on Aβ deposition in mice

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2023
The reduced clearance of amyloid-β (Aβ) is thought to contribute to the development of the pathology associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is characterized by the deposition of Aβ plaques.

Reactivity to AQP4 epitopes in relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Neuroimmunology, 2013
Autoantibodies against the water channel AQP4, expressed predominately in central nervous system astrocytes, are markers and pathogenic factors in Devic's disease. In this study we examined whether Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients recognize antigenic epitopes on AQP4 that may define distinct disease subsets.

Low Incidence of Relapses After Vaccination in Anti‐Aquaporin‐4 Antibody‐Positive NMOSD

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) may experience increased signs and symptoms of their underlying disease when vaccinated against meningococcal disease before receiving complement component 5 inhibitor therapies. This retrospective analysis indicated an overall low relapse incidence (mean [range], 3.3% [0.7%–10.6 ...

Aquaporin-4 deficiency induced white matter injury via upregulated complement component 3 in cerebral small vessel disease

open access: yesJournal of Neuroinflammation
Background Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is the most common neurological disorder associated with a high incidence of stroke and dementia. For the heterogeneity of the pathogenesis, effective preventive and therapeutic strategies remain limited ...

Structural Alterations of Segmented Macular Inner Layers in Aquaporin4-Antibody-Positive Optic Neuritis Patients in a Chinese Population. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
This study aimed to analyse the structural injury of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) and segmented macular layers in optic neuritis (ON) in aquaporin4-antibody (AQP4-Ab) seropositivity(AQP4-Ab-positiveON) patients and in AQP4-Ab ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Immunodominant T cell determinants of aquaporin-4, the autoantigen associated with neuromyelitis optica. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
Autoantibodies that target the water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) are IgG1, a T cell-dependent Ig subclass. However, a role for AQP4-specific T cells in this CNS inflammatory disease is not known.

AQP4 Aggregation State Is a Determinant for Glioma Cell Fate [PDF]

open access: yesCancer Research, 2019
Abstract The glial water channel protein aquaporin-4 (AQP4) forms heterotetramers in the plasma membrane made of the M23-AQP4 and M1-AQP4 isoforms. The isoform ratio controls AQP4 aggregation into supramolecular structures called orthogonal arrays of particles (AQP4-OAP).
