Generalized Efron's biased coin design and its theoretical properties

open access: yesJournal of Applied Probability, 2016
AbstractIn clinical trials with two treatment arms, Efron's biased coin design, Efron (1971), sequentially assigns a patient to the underrepresented arm with probabilityp> ½. Under this design the proportion of patients in any arm converges to ½, and the convergence rate isn-1, as opposed ton-½under some other popular designs.

The minimum effective concentration (MEC90) of bupivacaine for an ultrasound-guided suprainguinal fascia iliaca compartment block for analgesia in knee surgery: a dose-finding study [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Anesthesiology
Background In recent years, the suprainguinal fascia iliaca compartment block (SFICB) has become more common in clinical practice. This assessor-blinded dose-finding study aimed to determine the minimum effective concentration (MEC90, MEC95) of ...

Biased coin designs: some properties and applications

open access: yes, 1995
A brief review of biased coin designs is presented. Some asymptotic properties of the adaptive biased coin designs of Wei (1978) and Eisele (1994) are given. Applications of biased coin designs to estimation and testing problems are also given.

Minimum effective concentration of ropivacaine for ultrasound-guided pericapsular nerve group block to relieve spinal anesthesia positioning pain in elderly patients with femoral intertrochanteric fracture: a double-blind biased-coin dose-finding study

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundThe optimal ropivacaine concentration for ultrasound-guided pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block to relieve spinal anesthesia positioning pain in elderly patients with femoral intertrochanteric fracture remains unclear.

The EC90 of remifentanil for blunting cardiovascular responses to head fixation for neurosurgery under total intravenous anesthesia with propofol and remifentanil based on bispectral index monitoring: estimation with the biased coin up-and-down sequential method

open access: yesBMC Anesthesiology, 2017
Background Head fixation can induce hemodynamic instability. Remifentanil is commonly used with propofol for total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) during neurosurgery.

Multi-objective optimal designs in comparative clinical trials with covariates: The reinforced doubly adaptive biased coin design

open access: yesThe Annals of Statistics, 2012
The present paper deals with the problem of allocating patients to two competing treatments in the presence of covariates or prognostic factors in order to achieve a good trade-off among ethical concerns, inferential precision and randomness in the treatment allocations.

Sugammadex ED90 dose to reverse the rocuronium neuromuscular blockade in obese patients

open access: yesRevista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões
Objective: to determine the ED90 (minimum effective dose in 90% of patients) of sugammadex for the reversal of rocuronium-induced moderate neuromuscular blockade (NMB) in patients with grade III obesity undergoing bariatric surgery.

Minimum effective concentration 90 (EC90) of ropivacaine for Femoral nerve block: A biased-coin up-and-down sequential method study

open access: yesIndian Journal of Anaesthesia
Background and Aims: The femoral nerve (FN) is commonly blocked using ropivacaine to provide postoperative analgesia after knee surgery. However, the minimal required concentration has not yet been defined.
