Drosophila lacks C20 and C22 PUFAs

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2010
Drosophila melanogaster has been considered a model organism for investigating human diseases and genetic pathways. Whether Drosophila is an ideal model for nutrigenomics, especially for FA metabolism, however, remains to be illustrated.

Ciliary Membrane Lipid Homeostasis in Health and Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review systematically delineates the distinct lipid landscapes of ciliary membranes, including the spatial organization of phosphoinositides, cholesterol, and sphingolipids. It elucidates how these lipids orchestrate ciliogenesis, signal transduction, and membrane dynamics in cilia beating, and highlights how their dysregulation drives ...

Identification and Functional Characterization of Genes Encoding Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Biosynthetic Activities from Unicellular Microalgae

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2013
In order to identify novel genes encoding enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of nutritionally important omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, a database search was carried out in the genomes of the unicellular photoautotrophic green alga ...

The role of FADS gene polymorphic variants in adaptation to the Northern climatic conditions and metabolic disorders

open access: yesЯкутский медицинский журнал
The review summarizes the studies of the role of the FADS gene in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids, as one of the mechanisms of human adaptation to the environmental conditions, in particular, a cold climate.

Revisiting Securidaca longipedunculata Seed Oil: Applying NMR and Mass Spectroscopy to Confirm the Presence of 2‐Acetyl‐1,3‐Diacyl–sn‐Glycerols and Conjugated Hydroxydienoic Fatty Acids

open access: yesJournal of the American Oil Chemists' Society, EarlyView.
The manuscript confirms and expands on previous reports concerning the presence of unusual conjugated hydroxydienoic fatty acids and acetyl‐TAG in the seed oil of Securidaca longipedunculata. The location of acetate only at sn‐2 of TAG was conclusively shown by high resolution NMR and hydroxy seed fatty acids are characterized.

Functional characterisation of two Δ12-desaturases demonstrates targeted production of linoleic acid as pheromone precursor in Nasonia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Insect pheromones are often derived from fatty acid metabolism. Fatty acid desaturases, enzymes introducing double bonds into fatty acids, are crucial for the biosynthesis of these chemical signals.

Dual regulation of mouse Δ5- and Δ6-desaturase gene expression by SREBP-1 and PPARα

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2002
In the process of seeking sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1a (SREBP-1a) target genes, we identified and cloned a cDNA clone encoding mouse Δ5-desaturase (D5D). The hepatic expression of D5D as well as Δ6-desaturase (D6D) was highly activated in

Different Cis-Regulatory Elements Control the Tissue-Specific Contribution of Plastid ω-3 Desaturases to Wounding and Hormone Responses

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2021
Trienoic fatty acids are essential constituents of biomembranes and precursors of jasmonates involved in plant defense responses. Two ω-3 desaturases, AtFAD7 and AtFAD8, synthetize trienoic fatty acids in the plastid.
