Antimicrobial Activities of Ellagitannins against Clostridiales perfringens, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus plantarum and Staphylococcus aureus

open access: yesMolecules, 2020
In this study, we tested the growth inhibition effect of 22 individual ellagitannins and of pentagalloylglucose on four bacterial species, i.e., Clostridiales perfringens, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus plantarum and Staphylococcus aureus.

Pomegranate Juice and Extract Consumption Increases the Resistance to UVB-induced Erythema and Changes the Skin Microbiome in Healthy Women: a Randomized Controlled Trial. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that topical application and oral consumption of pomegranate reduces UVB-induced skin damage. We therefore investigated if oral pomegranate consumption will reduce photodamage from UVB irradiation and alter ...

Mitochondria‐associated membranes (MAMs): molecular organization, cellular functions, and their role in health and disease

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 16, Issue 1, Page 11-24, January 2026.
Mitochondria‐associated membranes (MAMs) are contact sites between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria that regulate calcium signaling, lipid metabolism, autophagy, and stress responses. This review outlines their molecular organization, roles in cellular homeostasis, and how dysfunction drives neurodegeneration, metabolic disease, cancer, and ...

Enzymatic oxidation of ellagitannin and a new ellagitannin metabolite from Camellia japonica leaves

open access: yesTetrahedron, 2017
Abstract Polyphenols in the leaves of Camellia japonica L. at different stages of growth were analyzed by HPLC. Pedunculagin [2,3; 4,6-bis-( S )-hexahydroxydiphenoyl- d -glucose] was the major polyphenol in the youngest leaves. The levels of this compound and (+)-catechin decreased as the leaves matured.

Punicalagin Enhances Autophagy Through Sirtuin 1/FoxO3a Axis to Inhibit Intracellular Mycobacterium Abscessus Infection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 2, 9 January 2026.
Punicalagin, a pomegranate molecule, helps the body fight Mycobacterium abscessus. It preferentially boosts interstitial macrophages in the lung, stabilizing mitochondria and switching on the autophagy via SIRT1/FoxO3a, which lowers bacterial load without directly killing bacteria.

Bioactivity‐Guided Isolation of β‐Sitosterol From Terminalia glabrescens as a Potent Anti‐Zika Virus Agent

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 23, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Zika virus (ZIKV) infection remains a global health concern due to its neurological complications and the lack of specific drugs or vaccines. This study investigated the anti‐ZIKV potential of an ethanolic extract from Terminalia glabrescens leaves.

Consumption of watermelon juice enriched in L-citrulline and pomegranate ellagitannins enhanced metabolism during physical exercise [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
L-Citrulline is a nonessential amino acid precursor of arginine and indirectly a precursor of nitric oxide (NO), which is a vasodilator and increases mitochondrial respiration.
