Targeting CDK5 in Astrocytes Promotes Calcium Homeostasis Under Excitotoxic Conditions

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2021
Glutamate excitotoxicity triggers overactivation of CDK5 and increases calcium influx in neural cells, which promotes dendritic retraction, spine loss, increased mitochondrial calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum, and neuronal death.

Precision therapies for genetic epilepsies in 2025: Promises and pitfalls

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract By targeting the underlying etiology, precision therapies offer an exciting paradigm shift to improve the stagnant outcomes of drug‐resistant epilepsies, including developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. Unlike conventional antiseizure medications (ASMs) which only treat the symptoms (seizures) but have no effect on the underlying ...

Abnormalities in Glutamate Metabolism and Excitotoxicity in the Retinal Diseases [PDF]

open access: yesScientifica, 2013
In the physiological condition, glutamate acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter in the retina. However, excessive glutamate can be toxic to retinal neurons by overstimulation of the glutamate receptors. Glutamate excess is primarily attributed to perturbation in the homeostasis of the glutamate metabolism.

Avaliação do efeito neuroprotetor de lectinas frente à neurotoxicidade glutamatérgica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012

The non-adrenergic imidazoline-1 receptor protein nischarin is a key regulator of astrocyte glutamate uptake

open access: yesiScience, 2022
Summary: Astrocytic GLT-1 is the main glutamate transporter involved in glutamate buffering in the brain, pivotal for glutamate removal at excitatory synapses to terminate neurotransmission and for preventing excitotoxicity. We show here that the surface

Neurometabolite abnormalities and associations with epilepsy duration and cognition in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective This study investigated whether idiopathic generalized epilepsies (IGEs) are associated with neuroinflammation by measuring neurometabolite levels and brain temperature using whole‐brain magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI).

Enriched environment inhibits GLT-1 ubiquitination by downregulating SMURF1 to attenuate ischemic brain injury induced excitotoxicity

open access: yesCell & Bioscience
Background Excitotoxicity induced by glutamate contributes significantly to ischemic brain injury. The role of enriched environment (EE) in promoting neurological recovery post-stroke is well-established, yet its impact on excitotoxicity remains unclear.

Pharmacological effects of gastrodin: Insight into neurological diseases and mechanism in ferroptosis and pyroptosis

open access: yesIbrain, Volume 11, Issue 1, Page 74-83, Spring 2025.
Pharmacological effects of gastrodin include prevention and treatment of cognitive decline and reperfusion injuries, anticonvulsion, antiepilepsy, antidepressants, and analgesia, which are related to antiferroptosis and antipyroptosis. Abstract Gastrodin, as an effective monomer of gastrodia elata, plays a significant role in anti‐inflammatory ...

Does GDNF exert its neuroprotective effects on photoreceptors in the rd1 retina through the glial glutamate transporter GLAST? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
PURPOSE: We previously demonstrated that exogenous glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) induces histological and functional protection of photoreceptors in the retinal degeneration (rd1) mouse model.
