Genetic diversity of the JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) and mitochondrial DNA ancestry in Misiones, Argentina

open access: yesInfection, Genetics and Evolution, 2019
The use of human and viral genetic markers offers a novel way to study human migration in multiethnic populations of Latin America. Our goal was to characterize the genetic diversity and geographical origins of JC Polyomavirus (JCPyV) and the genetic ancestry of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in inhabitants from 25 de Mayo, Misiones-Argentina, a small ...

First detection of JC polyomavirus in vaginal secretions from nonpregnant women: Exploring sexual transmission as a potential route of infection

open access: yesInternational Journal of Infectious Diseases
Objectives: JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) is a ubiquitous human virus responsible for asymptomatic lifelong persistent infection. Profound immunosuppression, or prolonged treatment with specific immunomodulatory molecules, may result in the development of ...

JCPyV NCCR analysis in PML patients with different risk factors: exploring common rearrangements as essential changes for neuropathogenesis [PDF]

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2020
Abstract Background During severe immunosuppression or treatment with specific biological drugs, human polyomavirus JC (JCPyV) may establish a lytic infection in oligodendrocytes, leading to progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).

Prevalence and Molecular Profiling of Merkel Cell Polyomavirus in Patients With Monkeypox Virus Infection

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 98, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Mpox, caused by Monkeypox virus (MPXV), is associated with mucosal involvement and immune modulation that may influence viral coinfections. Merkel Cell Polyomavirus (MCPyV), a ubiquitous virus capable of lifelong persistence, was investigated in 66 Mpox patients enrolled at Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases (Rome ...

Human polyomavirus BKPyV and JCPyV serostatus has no impact on women´s human papillomavirus infection outcome

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2023
IntroductionPolyomaviruses have both structural and functional similarities with papillomaviruses. Accordingly, their role in human papillomavirus (HPV) associated malignancies has been studied with conflicting results. Our goal was to disclose any association between BK (BKPyV) and/or JC (JCPyV) polyomavirus serology and HPV data derived from Finnish ...

DNA Virus Detection in Olfactory Neuroblastomas Using Targeted Enrichment NGS

open access: yesNeuropathology, Volume 46, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT A variety of malignancies can be found in the sinonasal tract including the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and skull base. Many of these are attributed to viruses, for example, carcinomas with the presence of transcriptionally active high‐risk human papillomavirus, as well as Epstein–Barr virus associated malignant lymphoepithelial carcinoma

Tumor Immunotherapy and Microbiome: From Bench‐to‐Bedside Applications

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 2, February 2026.
The microbiome is related to the efficacy of immunotherapy and can be utilized to predict the efficacy and adverse reactions of immunotherapy. Microbiome‐targeted intervention strategies can improve the efficacy of ICI, but necessitating more comprehensive exploration.

Human Polyomavirus BK Genome Analysis in BKPyV Induced Rodent Cell Lines

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 5, October 2025.
In this study, we analyzed the BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) genome derived from three rodent cell lines established from BKPyV induced tumors. BKPyV derived one cell line had a large deletion. The noncoding control region (NCCR) of BKPyV derived from these cell lines had the same structure as viruses induced tumors.
