Vibronic coupling explains the ultrafast carotenoid-to-bacteriochlorophyll energy transfer in natural and artificial light harvesters

open access: yes, 2015
The initial energy transfer in photosynthesis occurs between the light-harvesting pigments and on ultrafast timescales. We analyze the carotenoid to bacteriochlorophyll energy transfer in LH2 Marichromatium purpuratum as well as in an artificial light ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Transplanckian Collisions at the LHC and Beyond [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Elastic collisions in the transplanckian region, where the center-of-mass energy is much larger than the fundamental gravity mass scale, can be described by linearized general relativity and known quantum-mechanical effects as long as the momentum ...

Role of High-Linear Energy Transfer Radiobiology in Space Radiation Exposure Risks.

open access: yesInternational Journal of Particle Therapy, 2018
Many manned missions to the Moon and Mars are scheduled in the near future. However, space radiation presents a major hazard to humans, and astronauts are constantly exposed to radiation, including high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation, which ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Dosimetric comparison of intensity-modulated proton therapy and proton arc therapy for pediatric ependymoma

open access: yesActa Oncologica
Background and purpose: Proton Arc Therapy (PAT) is an emerging proton therapy treatment modality with the potential to reduce radiation exposure to healthy tissues compared to conventional Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) with fewer beams. This

Nonlinear oscillations of rectangular plate with 1:3 internal resonance between different modes

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2018
The energy transfer between different modes of rectangular plate with 1:3 internal resonance is investigated. The ordinary differential equations of motion for the plate are worked out by applying the Galerkin’s method.

The dynamics of co- and counter rotating coupled spherical pendulums

open access: yes, 2014
The dynamics of co- and counter-rotating coupled spherical pendulums (two lower pendulums are mounted at the end of the upper pendulum) is considered. Linear mode analysis shows the existence of three rotating modes.

Intramolecular Energy Transfer Through Linear Polynes. Effect of Spacers

open access: yesMolecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Incorporating Nonlinear Optics, 1990
The optical properties of linear polyenes terminally substituted with different molecules (mainly anthryl- and TPP-substituents) have been studied. Bicyclic spacers within the polyene chain affect the quantum yields but do not interrupt intramolecular energy transfer between the endgroups.
