Host-Associated Distribution of Two Novel Mammarenaviruses in Rodents from Southern Africa

open access: yesViruses, 2022
Mammarenaviruses are hosted by several rodent species, a small number of which have been known to be zoonotic. Host surveillance among small mammals has identified a large diversity of previously undescribed mammarenaviruses.

Co-infecting Reptarenaviruses Can Be Vertically Transmitted in Boa Constrictor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Boid inclusion body disease (BIBD) is an often fatal disease affecting mainly constrictor snakes. BIBD has been associated with infection, and more recently with coinfection, by various reptarenavirus species (family Arenaviridae). Thus far BIBD has only

Complete Genome Sequence of a Novel Variant of Wenzhou Mammarenavirus [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Announcements, 2017
ABSTRACT Wenzhou mammarenavirus (WENV) is a novel species of Arenavirus that was first detected in China. We report here a novel WENV variant (WENV G107) from liver samples of Rattus norvegicus that shares 84.7% to 86.8% (large [L] segment) and 84.2% to 87.8% (small [S] segment ...

Host receptor-targeted therapeutic approach to counter pathogenic New World mammarenavirus infections [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
AbstractFive New World mammarenaviruses (NWMs) cause life-threatening hemorrhagic fever (HF). Cellular entry by these viruses is mediated by human transferrin receptor 1 (hTfR1). Here, we demonstrate that an antibody (ch128.1/IgG1) which binds the apical domain of hTfR1, potently inhibits infection of attenuated and pathogenic NWMs in vitro ...

Viral discovery and diversity in trypanosomatid protozoa with a focus on relatives of the human parasite Leishmania. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Knowledge of viral diversity is expanding greatly, but many lineages remain underexplored. We surveyed RNA viruses in 52 cultured monoxenous relatives of the human parasite Leishmania ( Crithidia and ...

A novel mammarenavirus (family Arenaviridae) in hedgehogs (Erinaceus roumanicus) in Europe

open access: yesArchives of Virology, 2023
AbstractIn this study, a novel mammarenavirus (family Arenaviridae) was identified in a hedgehog (family Erinaceidae) in Hungary and genetically characterized. Mecsek Mountains virus (MEMV, OP191655, OP191656) was detected in nine (45%) out of 20 faecal specimens collected from a Northern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus roumanicus).

Proteomics Computational Analyses Suggest that the Antennavirus Glycoprotein Complex Includes a Class I Viral Fusion Protein (α-Penetrene) with an Internal Zinc-Binding Domain and a Stable Signal Peptide

open access: yesViruses, 2019
A metatranscriptomic study of RNA viruses in cold-blooded vertebrates identified two related viruses from frogfish (Antennarius striatus) that represent a new genus Antennavirus in the family Arenaviridae (Order: Bunyavirales).

Understanding Immune Responses to Lassa Virus Infection and to Its Candidate Vaccines

open access: yesVaccines, 2022
Lassa fever (LF) is a deadly viral hemorrhagic fever disease that is endemic in several countries in West Africa. It is caused by Lassa virus (LASV), which has been estimated to be responsible for approximately 300,000 infections and 5000 deaths annually.
