FOXP3 and NFAT: Partners in Tolerance [PDF]

open access: yesCell, 2006
Regulatory T cells suppress autoimmune responses to self-antigens. Recent studies, including one in this issue of Cell (Wu et al., 2006), suggest that the ability of T cells to choose between launching a productive immune response, functional inactivation, or developing into regulatory T cells depends upon the interplay of the key transcriptional ...

NFAT1 C-terminal domains are necessary but not sufficient for inducing cell death. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The proteins belonging to the nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) family of transcription factors are expressed in several cell types and regulate genes involved in differentiation, cell cycle and apoptosis.

Delivery of the VIVIT Peptide to Human Glioma Cells to Interfere with Calcineurin-NFAT Signaling

open access: yesMolecules, 2021
The activation of NFAT (nuclear factor of activated T cells) transcription factors by calcium-dependent phosphatase calcineurin is a key step in controlling T cell activation and plays a vital role during carcinogenesis.

Selective Inhibition of NFAT Activation by a Peptide Spanning the Calcineurin Targeting Site of NFAT [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Cell, 1998
NFAT transcription factors play a key role in the immune response. The activation of NFAT proteins is controlled by calcineurin, the calmodulin-dependent phosphatase that is inhibited by the immunosuppressive drugs cyclosporin A and FK506. Here we identify a short conserved sequence in NFAT proteins that targets calcineurin to NFAT.

Do microRNAs play a role in the activity of plant-based vaccines?

open access: yesExpert Review of Vaccines, 2017
Introduction: An important trend in vaccinology is the development of oral vaccines based on genetically modified plants. Areas covered: Several studies have suggested that dietary microRNAs from plants and other organisms are bioavailable upon oral ...

Safety and efficacy of Tet-regulated IL-12 expression in cancer-specific T cells

open access: yesOncoImmunology, 2019
We explored whether engineering of T cell specificity and effector function improves immunotherapy of solid tumors. Although IL-12 can enhance cancer immunity, a strategy of safe IL-12 delivery without toxicity is currently lacking. We engineered T cells

Calcineurin inhibitors: status quo and perspectives

open access: yesBiomolecular Concepts, 2011
Despite the fact that cyclosporin A (CsA) and tacrolimus (FK506) are very potent drugs in the treatment of serious autoimmune diseases and in the prevention of graft vs.

Isoform-Selective NFAT Inhibitor: Potential Usefulness and Development

open access: yes, 2021
Nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT), which is the pharmacological target of immunosuppressants cyclosporine and tacrolimus, has been shown to play an important role not only in T cells (immune system), from which their name is derived, but also in

Targeting CaN/NFAT in Alzheimer’s brain degeneration

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2023
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a progressive loss of cognitive functions. While the exact causes of this debilitating disorder remain elusive, numerous investigations have characterized its two core pathologies:
