The ideas which crystallised into the ORAC project developed gradually at the JAC during the mid-1990s. Key to the process was probably Alan Bridger, head of the UKIRT software group, who had been thinking for some time about how to radically improve UKIRT’s end-to-end software system to make it easier to maintain and upgrade.
