The majority of eukaryotic cells synthesize neutral lipids and package them into cytosolic lipid droplets. In vertebrates, triacylglycerol-rich lipid droplets of adipocytes provide a major energy storage depot for the body, whereas cholesteryl ester-rich

Perilipin1 Expression as a Prognostic Factor in Patients with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung
Perilipin (PLIN) is a major structural protein located on the surface of lipid droplets. PLIN plays an important role in human metabolism and is associated with metabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and endocrine disorders.

A Flexible Network of Lipid Droplet Associated Proteins Support Embryonic Integrity of C. elegans
In addition to coordinating the storage and mobilization of neutral fat, lipid droplets (LDs) are conserved organelles that can accommodate additional cargos in order to support animal development.

Lipid droplet proteins (LDPs) coat the surface of triglyceride-rich lipid droplets and regulate their formation and lipolysis. We profiled hepatic LDP expression in fatty liver dystrophic (fld) mice, a unique model of neonatal hepatic steatosis that ...

Perilipin 5: putting the brakes on lipolysis [PDF]
Lipid droplets serve a vital function in many types of cells. In most cells of the body, cholesterol esters stored in lipid droplets are thought to serve as a source of cholesterol for membrane synthesis and repair when dietary cholesterol is scarce (1).

BODIPY-C12 incorporates into Perilipin-2 and Perilipin-3 labeled cytotrophoblast lipid droplets.
Cytotrophoblast plated for 4hr onto glass coverslips were incubated with 2μM BODIPY-C12 for 30 minutes and fixed as described in the methods section. Cells were immunolabeled with Perilipin-2 or Perilipin-3. Nuclei are labeled using Hoechst dye.

Mitochondrial and cellular mechanisms for managing lipid excess
Current scientific debates center on the impact of lipids and mitochondrial function on diverse aspects of human health, nutrition and disease, among them the association of lipotoxicity with the onset of insulin resistance in skeletal muscle, and with ...

Differential Splicing of Perilipin 5
Included among the most common diseases in the U.S., are metabolic diseases such as type II diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Understanding these diseases requires an understanding of neutral lipid storage and metabolism. Perilipins are a family of five conserved proteins that function in the regulation of neutral lipid metabolism.
