Discovery of PHB1 as a Novel Candidate Gene in Dominant Optic Atrophy

open access: yesClinical Genetics, EarlyView.
A heterozygous PHB1 missense variant (p.Ser147Phe) segregates with autosomal dominant optic atrophy in a multi‐generation family. Structural and cellular analyses suggest altered mitochondrial dynamics, identifying PHB1 as a novel candidate gene for hereditary optic neuropathy. ABSTRACT Hereditary optic neuropathies comprise a genetically heterogeneous

Prohibitin 1 expression is associated with prohibitin 2 expression in renal interstitial fibrosis rats

open access: yesRenal Failure, 2013
Prohibitin (PHB), a ubiquitous protein, plays a number of different molecular functions, and it is mainly located on the inner mitochondrial membrane and nuclei.

Prohibitins control cell proliferation and apoptosis by regulating OPA1-dependent cristae morphogenesis in mitochondria

open access: yes, 2008
Prohibitins comprise an evolutionarily conserved and ubiquitously expressed family of membrane proteins with poorly described functions. Large assemblies of PHB1 and PHB2 subunits are localized in the inner membrane of mitochondria, but various roles in ...

Exploring thylakoid emergence: evolution of membrane biogenesis and photosystem II assembly in early‐diverging cyanobacteria

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Overview of the results. Phylogenetic analyses of 36 assembly factors of photosystem II (PSII) and 13 proteins involved in membrane dynamics summarized in Siebenaller & Schneider (2023) were performed to investigate the taxonomic distributions and structural differences between the thylakoid‐less Gloeobacterales and the Phycobacteria. Summary Thylakoid

Prohibitin 1 in liver injury and cancer

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 2020
Prohibitin 1 is an evolutionary conserved and ubiquitously expressed protein that exerts different biological functions depending on its subcellular localization. The role of prohibitin 1 in liver cancer is controversial as it can be pro- or anti-tumorigenic.

A. Western blot showing the detection of endogenous Phb1 and Phb2 proteins, as well as β-actin in L929 cells (Mock) transduced with the empty vector MK117 (vector) or with MK117 derivatives expressing shRNA directed against PHB1 (MK118) or against PHB2 ...

Mitophagy in skeletal muscle: Impact of ageing, exercise and disuse

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Skeletal muscle plays an important role in whole‐body health, quality of life and regulation of metabolism. The maintenance of a healthy mitochondrial pool is imperative for the preservation of skeletal muscle quality and is mediated through mitochondrial quality control consisting of mitochondrial turnover mediated by a balance between ...

Targeting prohibitins induces apoptosis in acute myeloid leukemia cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Fluorizoline is a new synthetic molecule that induces apoptosis by selectively targeting prohibitins (PHBs). In this study, the pro-apoptotic effect of fluorizoline was assessed in two cell lines and 21 primary samples from patients with debut of acute ...

MICOS and MIMAS, multifunctional assemblies linking mitochondrial biogenesis, architecture, and function

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Mitochondrial cristae architecture is central for optimal oxidative phosphorylation and a healthy mitochondrial physiology. The intricate architecture of the inner mitochondrial membrane relies on protein complexes that compartmentalize the membrane by imposing membrane curvature, forming membrane contact sites or membrane subdomains ...

Characterisation and In Planta Activity of Bacteriophages That Infect the Key Bacterial Species Associated With Acute Oak Decline

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
Phages that infect the oak pathogens Brenneria goodwinii and Gibbsiella quercinecans were isolated. The phages were able to effectively reduce bacterial populations of their respective hosts in vitro. However, when applied in planta, the phages did not reduce host populations and instead phages and bacteria co‐existed over time.
