Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Preliminary analysis of a radiobiological experiment for LifeSat [PDF]

open access: yes
With the possibility of performing radiation life science experiments on a dedicated satellite (LifeSat) in space, a combined effort in radiation physics and radiation dosimetry, in addition to radiation biology, is clearly required to ensure that ...

Digital Ecosystems: Ecosystem-Oriented Architectures

open access: yes, 2011
We view Digital Ecosystems to be the digital counterparts of biological ecosystems. Here, we are concerned with the creation of these Digital Ecosystems, exploiting the self-organising properties of biological ecosystems to evolve high-level software ...

Towards Laser Driven Hadron Cancer Radiotherapy: A Review of Progress [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
It has been known for about sixty years that proton and heavy ion therapy is a very powerful radiation procedure for treating tumours. It has an innate ability to irradiate tumours with greater doses and spatial selectivity compared with electron and ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Microdosimetric relative biological effectiveness of therapeutic proton beams

open access: yesBiomedical Journal, 2015
When compared to photon beams, particle beams have distinct spatial distributions on the energy depositions in both the macroscopic and microscopic volumes. In a macroscopic volume, the absorbed dose distribution shows a rapid increase near the particle range, that is, Bragg peak, as particle penetrates deep inside the tissue.

Deviations from the inverse relationship between tumor and normal tissue dose and RBE in fast neutron data are compatible with the presence of hypoxia, with possible applications to hypo-fractionated proton therapy

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
Aim of studyFast neutron data from Hammersmith (UK) showed that the inverse relationship between dose and RBE (Relative Biological Effectiveness) is not maintained in many in vivo situations, originally attributed to hypoxic effects.

Evaluation of fingerprint development reagents for biological stain detection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Some latent fingerprint development techniques rely on the reaction with amino acids within the fingerprint and then either change in color or fluoresce to help visualize this fingerprint.

Development and experimental validation of an overlay mortar with biocide activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Biodeterioration of concrete by microorganism colonisation may be a problem in several structures, especially in irrigation and hydroelectric canals.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.
