The transverse–axial tubular system (TATS) is the extension of sarcolemma growing to the cell interior, providing sufficient calcium signaling to induce calcium release from sarcoplasmic reticulum cisternae and stimulate the contraction of neighboring ...

Approaches to High-Throughput Analysis of Cardiomyocyte Contractility
The measurement of the contractile behavior of single cardiomyocytes has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the myocardium.

Breaking sarcomeres by in vitro exercise [PDF]
AbstractEccentric exercise leads to focal disruptions in the myofibrils, referred to as “lesions”. These structures are thought to contribute to the post-exercise muscle weakness and to represent areas of mechanical damage and/or remodelling. Lesions have been investigated in human biopsies and animal samples after exercise. However, this approach does

We introduce an additively manufactured bioreactor with a perfusion flow system and integrated temperature and pH sensors for skeletal muscle tissue biofabrication. The bioreactor's performance was evaluated by assessing the viability, spreading of the myoblast cells in a printed scaffold, and contraction of the isolated murine musculi interossei ...

Altered Sarcomeric Structure and Function in Woody Breast Myopathy of Avian Pectoralis Major Muscle
The “Woody” or “Wooden” breast disease is a severe myopathy of pectoralis major muscle recently identified within rapidly growing broiler lines all around the world with a prevalence rate around 20%, or even higher.

Light‐Driven Quadrupedal Walking Biohybrid Robot With Antagonistic Muscle‐Rings and Inclined Joints
This work presents a light‐driven quadrupedal walking biohybrid robot powered by antagonistic muscle‐rings that achieve alternating walking gait. Optical training improved reproducibility of cultured muscle tissues, while caffeine treatment enhanced contractile force.

The Drosophila formin Fhos is a primary mediator of sarcomeric thin-filament array assembly
Actin-based thin filament arrays constitute a fundamental core component of muscle sarcomeres. We have used formation of the Drosophila indirect flight musculature for studying the assembly and maturation of thin-filament arrays in a skeletal muscle ...

Discrete sarcomere length distribution in skeletal muscle
We analyzed the microstructure in the first-order laser diffraction line from both resting and tetanically contracting single twitch fibers from frog anterior tibial muscle to see if the distribution of sarcomere lengths is continuous or discrete ...

ABSTRACT Genome‐wide association studies (GWAS) link the Tropomyosin 1 (Tpm1) locus to quantitative blood trait variation, but related mechanisms are unclear. Tpm1 encodes an actin‐binding protein that regulates actin filament diversity, cell adhesion, signaling, and actomyosin contractility.
