Chain, William J.Chapter 1 outlines electrosynthetic chemistry and its applications in natural product total synthesis. As early as 1950, electrosynthetic methods were recognized as a powerful, but underutilized, tool that chemists could apply to natural

The discovery and early structural studies of arachidonic acid
Arachidonic acid and esterified arachidonate are ubiquitous components of every mammalian cell. This polyunsaturated fatty acid serves very important biochemical roles, including being the direct precursor of bioactive lipid mediators such as ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

PROGRESS IN THE TOTAL SYNTHESIS OF SPIROLIDE C AND A MODEL SYSTEM OF A KEY DIELS-ALDER MACROCYCLIZATION [PDF]
Spirolode C is a macrocyclic marine toxin produced by the dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii that has attracted significant synthetic interest due in particular to its rare spirocyclic imine fragment.

The Total Synthesis of Rhabdastrellic Acid A
The first total synthesis of rhabdastrellic acid A, a highly cytotoxic isomalabaricane triterpenoid, has been accomplished in a linear sequence of 14 steps from commercial geranylacetone.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Concise and Straightforward Asymmetric Synthesis of a Cyclic Natural Hydroxy-Amino Acid
An enantioselective total synthesis of the natural amino acid (2S,4R,5R)-4,5-di-hydroxy-pipecolic acid starting from D-glucoheptono-1, 4-lactone is presented.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
