Pertussis also called whooping cough is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by an infection with Bordetella (B.) pertussis. The secreted virulence factor pertussis toxin (PT) is an AB-type protein toxin and associated with the symptoms and the life-threatening complications of severe pertussis, especially in human infants.

AB toxins are proteins often used by pathogens as an attack molecule. However, some organisms use them as a defense molecule, when threatened by a predator. This PhD thesis provides insights on the understanding of the molecular mechanism of two AB toxins, representing the two distinct roles of attack and defense.
