Alphaherpesvirus Infection Disrupts Mitochondrial Transport in Neurons [PDF]

open access: yesCell Host & Microbe, 2012
Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that are essential for cellular metabolism but can be functionally disrupted during pathogen infection. In neurons, mitochondria are transported on microtubules via the molecular motors kinesin-1 and dynein and recruited to energy-requiring regions such as synapses.

Viruses, Periodontitis, and Systemic Diseases

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This narrative review aimed to summarize current evidence on the viral involvement in periodontitis and its relevance for systemic diseases. The oral cavity acts as an active viral reservoir and dissemination platform, where virus–microbiome interactions may promote dysbiosis, periodontitis progression, and systemic inflammatory effects, while the ...

The Role of VP16 in the Life Cycle of Alphaherpesviruses

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
The protein encoded by the UL48 gene of alphaherpesviruses is named VP16 or alpha-gene-transactivating factor (α-TIF). In the early stage of viral replication, VP16 is an important transactivator that can activate the transcription of viral immediate ...

A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis of the Epidemiology of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Infection in Dairy Cattle in Ethiopia

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
This systematic review and meta‐analysis summarise the epidemiology of bovine herpesvirus‐1 (BoHV‐1) infection in dairy cattle in Ethiopia. Analysis of 9 studies involving 5078 cattle revealed a high pooled seroprevalence of 46.02%, with higher estimates from c‐ELISA and an increasing temporal trend from 2018 to 2025.

Alphaherpesvirus: isolation, identification, partial characterisation, associated pathologic findings, and epidemiology in beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in Alaska and Arctic Canada

open access: yesArctic Science, 2018
Live, dead stranded, and harvested belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) in Alaska and the western Canadian Arctic were screened for viruses utilizing a primary beluga cell line. Samples consisted of swabs from blowhole, anus, and genital tract.

Equine Alphaherpesviruses Require Activation of the Small GTPases Rac1 and Cdc42 for Intracellular Transport

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
Viruses utilize host cell signaling to facilitate productive infection. Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) has been shown to activate Ca2+ release and phospholipase C upon contact with α4β1 integrins on the cell surface.

Herpesvirus genome integration in whole‐genome sequences of dementia and control cohorts

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract INTRODUCTION The infectious hypothesis suggests that microbes like herpesviruses may play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other related dementias through methods that may include viral genome integration. The occurrence of herpesvirus genome integration in dementia patients has not been thoroughly characterized ...

The pseudorabies virus UL13 protein kinase triggers phosphorylation of the RNA demethylase FTO, which is associated with FTO-dependent suppression of interferon-stimulated gene expression

open access: yesJournal of Virology
Alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase, also known as fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO), is an RNA demethylase that mediates the demethylation of N6,2-O-dimethyladenosine (m6Am) and N6-methyladenosine (m6A). Both m6Am and m6A are prevalent

Navigating the Cytoplasm: Delivery of the Alphaherpesvirus Genome to the Nucleus [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Issues in Molecular Biology, 2020
Herpesviruses virions are large and complex structures that deliver their genetic content to nuclei upon entering cells. This property is not unusual as many other viruses including the adenoviruses, orthomyxoviruses, papillomaviruses, polyomaviruses, and retroviruses, do likewise. However, the means by which viruses in the alphaherpesvirinae subfamily

Sequence of the ateline alphaherpesvirus 1 (HVA1) genome [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Virology, 2017
Here, we report the genome sequence of a spider monkey alphaherpesvirus (ateline alphaherpesvirus 1, HVA1) and compare it with that of other primate alphaherpesviruses. The HVA1 genome is 147,346 bp long and contains 67 predicted ORFs. The genetic layout of the HVA1 genome is similar to that of the squirrel monkey alphaherpesvirus (saimirine ...
