Abstract Intraperitoneal or intragastric injection of monosodium l -glutamate (4 mg/g) to infant rats invariably caused an increase in brain glutamine, never in brain glutamate. The toxicity (convulsions) observed after these doses was not unique to l -glutamate; monosodium l -aspartate or d -glutamate gave similar symptoms.

Two pathways for glutamate toxicity have been described, receptor-mediated excitotoxicity and non-receptor mediated oxidative glutamate toxicity. Here, we show that two distinct forms of receptor-mediated primary cortical neuronal death exist, chronic and acute glutamate toxicity, and that these depend on exposure time.
