Assessment of Phenotypic Tools for Detection of OXA-48, KPC, and NDM in Klebsiella pneumoniae in Oman

open access: yesDiagnostics
Background: The alarming increase in carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales is a matter of grave public health concern. The most ubiquitous carbapenemases, Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-, New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-, and ...

New Results From the Pre‐Pottery Neolithic Site of Al Uyaynah, Tabuk, in Northwestern Saudi Arabia

open access: yesArabian Archaeology and Epigraphy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Al Uyaynah is a low sandstone mound on an alluvial plain, long known for its extensive surface remains of stone‐built circular and rectangular structures. Following test excavations in 2012, more detailed excavation was undertaken in 2016 within one of the largest rectangular stone structures.

The in vitro activity of aztreonam-avibactam and cefiderocol against globally collected clinical metallo-β-lactamase- and/or serine-carbapenemase-positive Enterobacterales isolates and the utility of commonly used in vitro diagnostic kits

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
The NG-test CARBA 5 and Xpert Carba-R IVD kits were tested against 269 clinical Enterobacterales isolates selected for their previously determined carbapenemase content from the ATLAS Global Surveillance program, primarily from 2020 to 2022 ...

Rare but relevant: Ibogaine and cardiovascular complications—prolonged QT interval and ventricular arrhythmias

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Revived interest in psychedelic‐assisted therapies has also renewed focus on ibogaine, a psychoactive alkaloid, for its notable anti‐addictive potential. Evidence from observational, open‐label, and limited randomized placebo‐controlled trials indicates that ibogaine and its metabolite noribogaine reduce craving and withdrawal symptoms in ...

Synergistic activity of fosfomycin–meropenem and fosfomycin–colistin against carbapenem resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae: an in vitro evidence

open access: yesFuture Science OA, 2020
Aim: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of fosfomycin–meropenem and fosfomycin–colistin combinations against carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-Kp). Methods: A total of 50 CR-Kp isolates recovered from blood cultures were included in this

Energetic stress in combination with impaired fatty acid oxidation induces sequestration of CoA and adaptation of CoA metabolism

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Computational modelling and in vitro liver cell experiments indicate that medium‐chain acyl‐CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency causes an accumulation of (especially medium‐chain) acyl‐CoAs at the cost of free CoA (CoASH). A substantial decrease in CoASH impairs flux through many pathways essential for energy homeostasis.

Notes from the Field: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae Producing OXA-48-like Carbapenemases — United States, 2010–2015 [PDF]

open access: yesMMWR. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 2015
Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are bacteria that are often resistant to most classes of antibiotics and cause health care-associated infections with high mortality rates. Among CRE, strains that carry plasmid-encoded carbapenemase enzymes that inactivate carbapenem antibiotics are of greatest public health concern because of their ...

Characterization of carbapenemases, ESBLs, and plasmid-mediated quinolone determinants in carbapenem-insensitive Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in Riyadh hospitals

open access: yesJournal of Infection and Public Health, 2018
The main objective of this work was to characterize carbapenemases, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) among carbapenem-insensitive Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli clinical isolates which ...

Dissemination of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in France, 2012 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Objectives Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates (n = 1485) were received at the French Associated National Reference Center for Antibiotic Resistance in 2012 and were characterized for their mechanism of resistance to carbapenems.
