Prorenin independently causes hypertension and renal and cardiac fibrosis in cyp1a1-prorenin transgenic rats [PDF]
Plasma prorenin is commonly elevated in diabetic patients and appears to predict the development of diabetic nephropathy. However, the pathological role of prorenin is unclear. In the present study, a transgenic, inducible, hepatic prorenin-overexpressing rat model was generated and the effect of prorenin in organ injury was examined.

Characterization of elevated levels of endometrial renin-angiotensin system components suggest a role in endometrial repair. [PDF]
IntroductionEach month, the endometrium is shed, regenerated, and transformed in response to changing hormone levels. These processes occur in a tightly regulated manner, and irregularities are linked with reproductive health conditions such as ...

Receptor-mediated actions of renin and prorenin [PDF]
Renin can induce renal disease by generating angiotensin II and, thereby, increasing fibrosis. Huang et al describe a new mechanism of action whereby the renin-angiotensin system can also exert this effect. Direct activation of the renin/prorenin receptor in mesangial cells induced synthesis of TGF-beta and profibrotic proteins.

Prorenin in Hepatic Stellate Cell Extracellular Vesicles Induces Platelet-Dependent Thrombin Formation and Release of Profibrotic TGF-β. [PDF]
Platelets interact with extracellular vesicles shed by hepatic stellate cells to activate both cell types. Extracellular vesicles shed by activated hepatic stellate cells contain inactive prorenin. HSC‐EV interact with quiescent platelets to non‐proteolytically activate ligated prorenin.

(Pro)renin, Erythropoietin, Vitamin D and Urodilatin Release From Human Donor Kidneys During Normothermic Machine Perfusion: Predictors of Early Post-Transplant Outcome? [PDF]
ABSTRACT Background Human donor kidneys release (pro)renin, erythropoietin (EPO), active vitamin D, and urodilatin during normothermic machine perfusion (NMP). However, whether the endocrine function of donor kidneys is associated with post‐transplant kidney function is unclear.

The renal baroreflex: A systematic review and meta-analysis in healthy and hypertensive animals. [PDF]
Abstract The renal baroreflex describes the dose‐dependent relation between renal pressure and renin release. Former studies have approximated this relation through animal experiments, but the exact shape of the response curve and its alteration by hypertension remain unclear.

Vacuolar H+-ATPase and Megalin-Mediated Prorenin Uptake: Focus on Elements Beyond the (Pro)Renin Receptor. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Megalin is a multiple‐ligand receptor that contributes to protein reabsorption in the kidney. Recently, megalin was found to act as a novel endocytic receptor for prorenin. Internalization depended on the (pro)renin receptor. This receptor is an accessory protein of vacuolar H+‐ATPase (V‐ATPase), a complex consisting of 14 subunits and two ...

Prorenin is viewed as an ideal target molecule in the prevention of diabetic retinopathy. However, no drugs are available for inhibiting activation of prorenin. Here, we tested the effect of a prorenin peptide vaccine (VP) in the retina of a murine model
