INHIBITION OF BILIVERDIN REDUCTASE DIMINISHED THE PROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF BILIRUBIN AND BILIVERDIN AGAINST OXIDATIVE STRESS-INDUCED INJURY IN HUMAN VASCULAR ENDOTHELIUM

open access: yesActa Chimica Slovenica
Endothelial dysfunction, a key factor in cardiovascular diseases, is further aggravated by oxidative stress. Biliverdin (BV) and bilirubin (BR) are potent antioxidants that protect endothelial cells, with biliverdin reductase (BVR) converting BV to BR ...

Isolation of blue-green eggshell pigmentation-related genes from Putian duck through RNA-seq

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2019
Background The diversity of avian eggshell colour plays important biological roles in ensuring successful reproduction. Eggshell colour is also an important trait in poultry, but the mechanisms underlying it are poorly understood in ducks.

Acute pain transfusion reaction in a patient with thalassemia: In‐depth characterization of short‐ and long‐term phenotypes

open access: yesTransfusion, Volume 66, Issue 7, Page 1299-1315, July 2026.
Abstract Background Acute pain transfusion reaction (APTR) is a rare, under‐recognized condition of unknown etiology. It can cause significant distress in recipients, necessitating symptomatic management and, occasionally, hospitalization. Study Design and Methods Here, we present an APTR event in an adult subject with transfusion‐dependent thalassemia

Structure of human biliverdin IXβ reductase, an early fetal bilirubin IXβ producing enzyme

open access: yes, 2001
Biliverdin IXβ reductase (BVR-B) catalyzes the pyridine nucleotide-dependent production of bilirubin-IXβ, the major home catabolite during early fetal development.

Inactivation of phytochrome- and phycobiliprotein-chromophore precursors by rat liver biliverdin reductase

open access: yes, 1993
The phytochrome chromophore precursor, 3E-phytochromobilin, and the phycobiliprotein chromophore precursors, 3E-phycocyanobilin and 3E-phycoerythrobilin, are enzymatically converted to novel rubinoid products by purified rat liver biliverdin reductase ...

Metal‐dependent regulated cell death: Molecular architecture and translational frontiers

open access: yesiMeta, Volume 5, Issue 3, June 2026.
Intracellular metal dyshomeostasis orchestrates distinct regulated cell death programs, including iron‐driven ferroptosis, copper‐mediated cuproptosis, calcicoptosis, newly designated zincoptosis, mnoptosis, and coptosis. This review systematically delineates their molecular architectures—spanning from Sorafenib‐induced lipid peroxidation and ...

Biliverdin Reductase B Dynamics Are Coupled to Coenzyme Binding [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Molecular Biology, 2018
Biliverdin reductase B (BLVRB) is a newly identified cellular redox regulator that catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of multiple substrates. Through mass spectrometry analysis, we identified high levels of BLVRB in mature red blood cells, highlighting the importance of BLVRB in redox regulation.

Red blood cell membrane proteome as a reporter of disease severity, transfusion impact and genetic background in transfusion‐dependent β‐thalassaemia

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 208, Issue 6, Page 1980-1992, June 2026.
Summary Omics technologies have transformed research in haemoglobinopathies, yet the proteome of RBCs remains largely unexplored in transfusion‐dependent thalassaemia (TDT). In this proteomic analysis, Red blood cell (RBC) membranes from 48 adults with TDT were compared with healthy controls.

Bilirubin as a Modulator of WNK1 Protein Signaling: Implications for Neuroinflammatory Diseases

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 27, 13 May 2026.
ABSTRACT Previously regarded merely as a potentially harmful waste product of heme catabolism, bilirubin has now emerged as a pleiotropic molecule with potent antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and hormone‐like properties. Recent findings have revealed protective effects against cardiovascular, metabolic, autoimmune, and neoplastic diseases, as well as ...

Predictive value of biliverdin reductase‐A and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance on mild cognitive impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation
Aims/Introduction To investigate the predictive value of the biliverdin reductase‐A (BVR‐A) and the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR) on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and to ...
